The 'Second Shift' Is Not Why Women Avoid News
Women are more likely than men to avoid political and economic news, but the reasons for this behaviour are linked less to structural inequality or family-related stress than to personal attitudes and the emotional perception of news content. This conclusion was reached by HSE researchers after analysing data from a large-scale survey of more than 10,000 residents across 61 regions of Russia. The study findings have been published in Woman in Russian Society.

«Бойцовский клуб», капиталистическая готика и значение интерпретации

Логос. 2023. Т. 33. № 3. С. 165–216.
Pavlov A.

The paper provides an analysis of multiple interpretations of the cult film Fight Club. The author divides the readings of the film into three types—judgment interpretations, theoretical, or methodologically thorough interpretations, and argumentative interpretations. Further in the paper the author groups these interpretations under several headings—Henry Giroux’s Fight Club reading; a critique of the film as a sexist and patriarchal one, feminist interpretations, that make an emphasis not on criticizing, but on Marla Singer’s character; readings of the film as a “fascist,” “anarchist,” “nihilist” one; the analysis of the film as a postmodernist work etc. The author separately distinguishes several argumentative interpretations, that he characterizes as more adequate, while their authors seek to avoid sharp evaluation statements and are more focused on a consecutive analysis. Furthermore, the author proposes his own interpretation, stating that he does not believe it to be final or abolishing. This note gives him an opportunity to show a problematic nature of a main procedure in English-language humanities. In his reflections the author arrives to a conclusion that Fight Club’s universe may be characterized as a world of triumphant “gothic capitalism” (Anna Kornbluh). The paper closes with a discussion on the meaning of interpretation in contemporary humanities.
