HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

'We Did Not Limit the Time for Questions'
The International Laboratory for Supercomputer Atomistic Modelling and Multi-Scale Analysis at HSE University held a major conference on molecular dynamics. Participants had the opportunity to attend all the presentations, while speakers were given as much time as they needed to answer questions. The HSE News Service interviewed Grigory Smirnov, Head of the Laboratory, and Genri Norman, Chief Research Fellow, about the conference preparations and the discussions it generated.

Социальная технология оказания социальной помощи семьям с детьми: опыт внедрения и оценка эффективности

Мониторинг общественного мнения: Экономические и социальные перемены. 2023. № 5. С. 3–25.
Iarskaia-Smirnova E. R., Rozhdestvenskaya E., Abramov R., Борзов С. П., Aleksandrova M.

The article presents the study of the effectiveness of casework technol-ogy aimed at restoring the family’s abili-ty to independently cope with difficult life situations and satisfying the child’s basic needs. The evaluation is implemented in a mixed qualitative-quantitative method-ology and employs a model of technology management assessment in terms of W. Trochim. A qualitative assessment of the technology was carried out using semi-structured interviews with case managers and supervisors. The quantitative stage included a statistical analysis of family monitoring data obtained during the implementation of the tech-nology in six selected Family and Child Care Centers in Moscow. The authors estimate correlations and descriptive statistics for various indicators and test proposed monitoring scales for inter-nal consistency using Cronbach's Alpha coefficient.

Analysis of the interviews allowed to iden-tify the main components of the tech-nology’s success and barriers that may stand in the way of its successful implementation. The advantages of the analyz-ed technology include systematicity, consistency, coherence, internal consistency of the stages, high accuracy and quality of the provided diagnosis of family problems, the potential for early identification of risks of a crisis situation in the family, the emergence of tools understandable to a specialist, the possibility of formalizing, organizing and archiving case work. Barriers to the successful implementa-tion of the technology are associated with the high workload of supervisors, in-cluding large volume of paperwork, lack of support and mentorship for supervisors, and the complexities of the technology description language, which at the same time creates the potential of its optimization. The quantitative data ob-tained indicate the presence of positive dynamics in the state of families in general, including a reduction in the risk of child abuse in the family.

Sorokin P., Mironenko I. A., Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Science, Technology, and Society, 2026.
Social reality is undergoing rapid transformations, giving rise to new challenges for both social theory and practice. One of these much-discussed challenges is the so-called replicability crisis, a notion that describes the failure of the social sciences and humanities to verify established research findings with new empirical investigations. In the related debates, it is argued ...

Rational Electrostatic Iodine Regulation for Photothermally Stable Perovskite Solar Cells
Zhu X., Jiang X., Fu S. et al., Advanced Energy Materials 2025 Vol. 15 No. 47 Article e03666
Perovskite solar cells (PSCs), as a promising photovoltaic technology, have achieved remarkable progress in efficiency. However, perovskite with soft-lattice nature inherently suffers from severe iodine losses under photothermal operation, leading to the irreversible degradation in their photovoltaic performance, thereby remaining a great challenge to achieving durable PSCs. Here, electrostatic iodine regulation is reported by rational ...
