Scientists Develop Algorithm for Accurate Financial Time Series Forecasting
Researchers at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science benchmarked more than 200,000 model configurations for predicting financial asset prices and realised volatility, showing that performance can be improved by filtering out noise at specific frequencies in advance. This technique increased accuracy in 65% of cases. The authors also developed their own algorithm, which achieves accuracy comparable to that of the best models while requiring less computational power. The study has been published in Applied Soft Computing.

Fair Division: How Mathematics Helps to Divide the Indivisible
How can items be allocated among participants so that no one feels short-changed? Alexander Karpov, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, and his Singaporean colleague, Prof. Warut Suksompong, set out to find a mathematical answer to this question. In this interview, they discuss how a model of rational preferences is constructed, why one cannot rely on a simple sum of values, and where an algorithm that asks a minimal number of questions can be useful.

Electronics of the Future: Why Superconductors and Spintronics Work Together
It was once believed that superconductivity and magnetism avoided each other like the devil avoids holy water. However, modern nanostructures prove the opposite. A Russian theoretical physicist and Indian experimentalists have joined forces to create the electronics of the future—free from energy losses. Nataliya Pugach, Professor at the School of Electronic Engineering at HSE MIEM and Leading Research Fellow at the Quantum Nanoelectronics Laboratory, explains how a long-standing acquaintance in Cambridge grew into a mirror laboratory project with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), how superconducting spintronics works, and what surprises a researcher in India beyond the university campus.

Shvarts K.G., Russian Journal of Nonlinear Dynamics 2019 Vol. 15 No. 3 P. 261–270
This paper presents a derivation of new exact solutions to the Navier – Stokes equations in Boussinesq approximation describing two advective flows in a rotating thin horizontal fluid layer with no-slip or free boundaries in a vibrational field. The layer rotates at a constant angular velocity; the axis of rotation is aligned with the vertical axis of coordinates. ...

Model Of Cake Filtration In Porous Medium
Liudmila I. Kuzmina, Osipov Y., International Journal for Computational Civil and Structural Engineering 2024 Vol. 20 No. 3 P. 116–124
Strengthening of loose soil and creation of water-resistant underground walls are associated with filtration of small particles in a porous medium. Liquid solution pumped into a well under pressure spreads through hollow channels and strengthens the soil upon hardening. Many porous filters retain particles near the entrance. The particles deposited on the filter surface form ...

The formation of grout sediment in the pores of loose rock increases the water resistance of the soil and strengthens the foundation. A one-dimensional model of filtration in a porous medium considers the particles transport by the flow of a carrier fluid and the deposition of particles on the framework of a porous medium. The ...

Kuzmina L., Osipov Y., , in: Proceedings of the 8th International Technical Conference on Frontiers of HCET 2023. Advances in Transdisciplinary Engineering, Volume 43.: IOS Press, 2023. P. 450–455.
Suspension and colloid filtration in porous rocks is encountered in problems of underground hydromechanics associated with construction. The formation of grout sediment in the pores of loose rock increases the water resistance of the soil and strengthens the foundation. A one-dimensional model of filtration in a porous medium considers the particles transport by the flow ...

Quantum Dicke battery supercharging in the bound-luminosity state
S. S. Seidov, Mukhin S. I., Physical Review A: Atomic, Molecular, and Optical physics 2024 Vol. 109 No. 2 Article 022210
Quantum batteries, which are quantum systems to be used for storage and transformation of energy, are attracting research interest recently. A promising candidate for their investigation is the Dicke model, which describes an ensemble of two–level systems interacting with a single–mode electromagnetic wave in a resonator cavity. In order to charge the battery, a coupling between the ensemble of ...

Unsteady edge waves generated by time-harmonic pressure: exact solutions
Abrashkin A. A., Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical 2022 Vol. 55 No. 41 Article 415701
An analytical description of unsteady edge waves over a uniform slope is proposed. It is assumed that the waves are excited by time-harmonic external pressure with inhomogeneous spatial distribution. The problem is considered in Lagrangian variables. An exact solution of the hydrodynamic equations is obtained. It generalizes the stationary Gerstner–Constantin solution. The proposed model describes the dynamics of coastal splashes ...

Fluctuations and photon statistics in a quantum metamaterial near a superradiant transition
Shapiro D. S., Rubtsov A. N., Remizov S. V. et al., Physical Review A: Atomic, Molecular, and Optical physics 2019 Vol. 99 No. 6 Article 063821
The analysis of single-mode photon fluctuations and their counting statistics at the superradiant phase transition is presented. The study concerns the equilibrium Dicke model in a regime where the Rabi frequency, related to a coupling of the photon mode with a finite-number qubit environment, plays the role of the transition's control parameter. We use the ...

Nazaikinskii V., BEDRIKOVETSKY P., LIUDMILA I. KUZMINA et al., SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics 2020 Vol. 80 No. 5 P. 2120–2143
An initial-boundary value problem for a quasilinear system describing deep bed ltration of a monodisperse suspension in a medium with pores of various sizes is investigated analytically. The ltration function is assumed to have power-law type while tending to zero with the power index lower than one. We found that this assumption has two consequences: (i) the ...

L.I. Kuzmina, Nazaikinskii V. E., Osipov Y. V., Russian Journal of Mathematical Physics 2019 Vol. 26 No. 1 P. 130–134

L I Kuzmina, Osipov Y., , in: VII International Symposium Actual Problems of Computational Simulation in Civil EngineeringVol. 456.: IOP Publishing, 2018. Ch. 012052 P. 1–6.
Filtration describes a variety of the construction complex problems: strengthening loose soil to create a solid foundation, the movement of groundwater with solid impurities near underground structures, and many others. A model of two-sized deep bed filtration particles moving with different velocities in a porous medium with three-size pores is considered. The competition of pores and various size particles ...

A one-dimensional model for the deep bed filtration of a monodisperse suspension in a porous medium with variable porosity and permeability and multiple pore-blocking mechanisms is considered. It is assumed that the small pores are clogged by separate particles; pores of medium size, exceeding the diameter of the particles, can be blocked by arched bridges, forming stable structures at the ...
