‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

Роль механизмов реконсолидации и интерференции в обновлении эпизодических воспоминаний
Malysheva D., Anufrieva A., Психологические исследования: электронный научный журнал 2025 Т. 18 № 101 Статья 3
Episodic memories are adaptive and malleable, and several mechanisms have been proposed to explain how they are updated. Previous research has contrasted the reconsolidation and retroactive interference hypotheses, based on the idea that reconsolidation requires reactivation of prior memories, whereas interference does not. However, the effectiveness of reactivation procedures remains controversial. Therefore, the current study ...

Transcranial magnetic stimulation of the left middle frontal gyrus modulates the information people communicate in different social contexts
Martín-Luengo B., Vorobyova A., Feurra M. et al., Scientific Reports 2023 Vol. 13 No. 1 Article 9995
Neocortical structures of the left frontal lobe, middle frontal gyrus (MFG) in particular, have been suggested to be linked to the processing of punishing and unpleasant outcomes in decision tasks. To assess the role of left MFG (lMFG) in communicative decisions, we used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to inhibit its function during communicational exchanges under two types of ...

Neurochronometry of choice-induced preference changes: when do preferences actually change?
Davydova A., Julia Sheronova, Kosonogov V. et al., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2023 Vol. 17 Article 1222068
According to cognitive dissonance theory, a discrepancy between preferences and actions may lead to the revaluation of preferences, increasing preference for the chosen options and decreasing for the rejected options. This phenomenon is known as the spreading of alternatives (SoA), which results in a choice-induced preference change (CIPC). Previous neuroimaging studies have identified several brain ...

TMS study of the role of the medial and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in the post-decisional spreading of alternatives
Davydova A., Sheronova J., Kosonogov V. et al., , in: 2022 Fourth International Conference Neurotechnologies and Neurointerfaces (CNN) Kaliningrad, 14-16 Sept. 2022.: IEEE, 2022.
The theory of cognitive dissonance suggested by Leon Festinger (1957) relies on the psychological observations of the inconsistency between people’s choice and actions and proposes that the conflict between choice and actions causes the internal conflict named cognitive dissonance, which leads to the potential modification of the behavior or attitudes to reduce or eliminate this ...

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation modulates action naming over the left but not right inferior frontal gyrus
Bolgina T., Vidya Somashekarappa, Cappa S. et al., Brain Structure and Function 2022 Vol. 227 No. 8 P. 2797–2808
fMRI language mapping studies report right-hemispheric contribution to language in healthy individuals. However, it remains unclear whether these right-hemispheric patterns of activity are critical for language, which is highly relevant for clinical preoperative language mapping. The available findings are controversial. In this study, we first measured individual patterns of language lateralization with an fMRI language localizer ...

Role of the Prefrontal Cortex in Prosocial And Self-Maximization Motivations: An rTMS study
Zinchenko O., Savelo O., Klucharev V., Scientific Reports 2021 No. 11 Article 22334
More than a decade of neuroimaging and brain stimulation studies point to a crucial role for the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) in prosocial behavior. The intuitive prosociality model postulates that the rDLPFC controls intuitive prosocial behavior, whereas the reflective model assumes that the rDLPFC controls selfish impulses during prosocial behavior. The intuitive prosociality model ...

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on episodic memory
Galli G., Vadillo M., Sirota M. et al., Brain Stimulation 2019 Vol. 12 No. 2 P. 231–241
Background: In the past decade, several studies have examined the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on long-term episodic memory formation and retrieval. These studies yielded conflicting results, likely due to differences in stimulation parameters, experimental design and outcome measures. Objectives: In this work we aimed to assess the robustness of tDCS effects on long-term episodic memory ...

Examining the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on human episodic memory with machine learning
Petrovskaya A., Kirillov B., Asmolova A. et al., Plos One 2020 Vol. 15 No. 12 P. 1–15
We aimed to replicate a published effect of transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) -induced recognition enhancement over the human ventrolateral prefrontal cortex [1] and analyze the data with machine learning. We investigated effects over an adjacent region, the dorsolateral PFC. We found weak or absent effects over the VLPFC and DLPFC. We conducted machine learning studies ...

Dynamic changes in prefrontal cortex involvement during verbal episodic memory formation
Galli G., Feurra M., Pavone E. F. et al., Biological Psychology 2017 P. 36–44
During encoding, the neural activity immediately before or during an event can predict whether that event will be later remembered. The contribution of brain activity immediately after an event to memory formation is however less known. Here, we used repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) to investigate the temporal dynamics of episodic memory encoding with a ...
