‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Phosphorescent Cyclometalated Palladium(II) and Platinum(II) Complexes Derived from Diaminocarbene Precursors
Kashina M., Luzyanin K., Dar'in D. et al., Inorganic Chemistry 2024 Vol. 63 No. 12 P. 5315–5319
Metal-mediated self-assembly of isocyanides and methyl 4-aminopyrimidine-5-carboxylate leads to luminescent PdII and PtII complexes featuring C,N-cyclometalated acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC) ligands. The solid-state luminescent properties of these diaminocarbene derivatives are attributed to their triplet-state metal/metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (3MMLCT) nature, which is driven by attractive intermolecular M···M interactions further reinforced by the intramolecular π–π interactions even in the ...

Base-Ionizable Anionic NHC Ligands in Pd-catalyzed Reactions of Aryl Chlorides
Chernenko A., Baydikova V., Kutyrev V. et al., ChemCatChem 2024 Article e202301471
Aryl chlorides, due to their affordability and accessibility, are preferred reagents in Pd-catalyzed arylation reactions. However, the reactivity of aryl chlorides is often lower than that of aryl bromides and iodides due to the significantly higher barriers of the oxidative addition stage. This research introduces a novel design for NHC ligands, which notably enhances the ...

Noble Metal versus Abundant Metal Catalysts in Fine Organic Synthesis: Cost Comparison of C–H Activation Methods
Komarova A., Dmitry S. Perekalin, Organometallics 2023 Vol. 42 No. 13 P. 1433–1438
There is a common assumption that replacement of the classical catalyst based on rare and expensive noble metals by the catalysts based on earth-abundant metals will dramatically reduce the costs of organic synthesis. Herein we demonstrate that it may not be true, mainly because sophisticated organic substrates and modern reagents are often as expensive as ...

Palladium Nanoparticles Entrapped In a Hydrogen Bonded Crystalline Organic Salt Matrix as a Selective Heterogeneous Reduction Catalyst
Kuznetsova S., Yunusov S., Gak A. et al., ChemistrySelect 2022 Vol. 7 No. 41 Article e202203011
Hydrogen bonded crystalline organic salt matrix encapsulates Pd nanoparticles and makes them selective non-pyrophoric catalysts towards reduction of carbon – carbon triple bonds, inhibiting simultaneous C=O reduction. The comparison of the catalytic performance with Pd/C was carried out to show similar catalytic activity of both catalysts towards C=C bonds. ...

Mechanistic Studies for Pd(II)(O2) Reduction Generating Pd(0) and H2O: Formation of Pd(OH)2 as a Key Intermediate
Cha J., Lee E., Dmitry V. Yandulov, Inorganic Chemistry 2022 Vol. 61 No. 37 P. 14544–14552
Molecular oxygen (O2) remains to be an ideal yet underutilized feedstock for the oxidative transformation of organic substrates and renewable energy systems such as fuel cells. Palladium (Pd) has shown particular promise in enabling these applications. The present study describes a Pd-mediated O2 reduction to water via C–H activation of 9,10-dihydroanthracene (DHA) by a Pd(II) ...

A. B. Yaroslavtsev, I. V. Svitanko, Egorov M. P., Russian Chemical Bulletin 2022 Vol. 71 No. 1 P. 176–180
Probably, humans are called Homo sapiens because they learn something throughout the whole life. As soon as we are born, we begin to be aware of the surrounding world bit by bit, then we go to school, to the institute, and to post-graduate courses. However, it is important that, having reached a certain level, a ...
