HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

2022. Т. 15. № 81.

The underlying mechanisms of implicit learning of complex spatial patterns are not fully understood. Does the implicit knowledgeacquisition occur at once or incrementally? In case of anagram solving the application of the knowledge regarding the letter position is usually conscious and controlled. It is unclear though if one can implicitly learn the solution path andfurtherapply it unconsciously. In the current study we aimed to detect the mechanisms of implicit learning by means of complicating the explication of the solution rules. We hypothesized that implicit knowledge of the solution path wouldaffect the choice ofan anagram solutions, would it alsocomplicate the solution of a simple anagram different fromthe learned solution. Confidence ratings representeda measure of awareness in a classification task where participants have to identify the path of an anagram creation. The study was conducted online and involved375 participants. Given the study results it is not yet possible to make clear conclusions regarding implicit learningmechanisms. It is also unknown if learning of a solution pattern happens simultaneously or incrementally. Limitations of the study as well as future directions are discussed.

С., Shestakova A., Arzumanyan N. et al., Frontiers in Psychology 2026 Vol. 17 - 2026 P. 1–18
Background:  Delay discounting refers to the tendency to choose sooner, smaller rewards over larger, later rewards. Many previous studies link this tendency positively to reward sensitivity, yet the specific mechanisms behind this association remain poorly understood. Reward sensitivity may relate to delay discounting through at least three possible pathways: increased sensitivity to reward size, increased sensitivity ...
