The review essay is devoted to the book by A. Kelly "The Discovery of Chance: The Life and Thought of Alexander Herzen" (Cambridge, 2016).
The paper focuses on the evolution of the relationship between the Michurinist biology, Darwinism, and Lamarckism in the 1930–50s. The argument is based on the analysis of citation practices in Lysenkoist periodicals and programmatic statements of Lysenko and his close associates.
For the first time in Russian, a special analysis of David Hull's historiographical approach and his evolutionary-epistemological model of science development is presented. This analysis connects his model with the presentism problem in historiography of science.
