At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Sandpile Cellular Automata with Manna Rule on the Chung-Lu Graph: Application to X Social Network
Dmitriev A., Kornilov V., Batienkov R., Lecture Notes in Civil Engineering 2026 Vol. 886 P. 249–255
Numerous studies have provided compelling evidence that the probability distribution of avalanche sizes follows a power law, and that 1/f noise is present in the stochastic dynamics of landslides. We present a theoretical explanation of these phenomena within the framework of self-organized criticality theory, proposing a discrete-time model in the form of a sandpile cellular ...

Sandpile Cellular Automata with Manna Rule on the Chung-Lu Graph: Application to X Social Network
Dmitriev A., Shulman I., Lebedev A., Studies in Computational Intelligence 2026 Vol. 1265 P. 266–273
A discrete-time model is presented for the self-organization of the X/Twitter social network to the edge of a phase transition, characterized by avalanche-like propagation of information in the network. The model is based on the analogy between the critical dynamics of the X social network and sandpile cellular automata with Manna rule on the Chung-Lu ...

Неравновесное состояние в квазиодномерных сверхпроводящих каналах
Arutyunov K., Kharitonov I. A., Petrosyants K. O., JETP Letters 2026 Vol. 124 No. 6 P. 1–16
Superconducting properties of metallic micro- and nanowires can be entirely different from those of bulk superconductors. Of particular interest is the nonequilibrium current-induced state of a quasi-one-dimensional superconducting channel. The most interesting phenomenon here is the stepped I–V characteristic, explained by a process known as phase slip center activation. If the origin of such step-like ...

When universal machine learning models fail in capacitance prediction for carbon-based supercapacitors: Leakage-aware validation and electrolyte screening
Makarov D. M., Kalikin N., Fashchevsky K. A. et al., Electrochimica Acta 2026 Vol. 579 Article 150159
Machine learning (ML) has become a powerful tool for accelerating the development of carbon-based supercapacitors; however, most published models assume that a single predictive framework can describe both conventional porous carbons and hybrid carbon electrodes. Here, we test this assumption using a comprehensive benchmark dataset and an extended literature-curated dataset enriched with synthesis- and electrolyte-related descriptors. Three ML algorithms ...

Ranging Precision Comparison of Direct and Non-Line-of-Sight LiDAR Systems Based on SNSPD
Махлуф М., Ozhegov R., Elezov M. et al., Фотоника 2026 Vol. 20 No. 6 P. 414–423
This paper compares the ranging precision of direct time-of-flight (dToF) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) LiDAR architectures, both using a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD). Both systems operate at 1550 nm with a 50 ps pulsed laser and time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC). The dToF configuration achieved approximately 100 µm precision at 10 m, while the NLOS configuration achieved 500 µm precision for ...

Chibisov A., Gnidenko A., Chibisova M. et al., FlatChem 2023 Vol. 41 Article 100533
Manufacturing precise quantum computers with small errors in quantum operations, long coherence times, and low power consumption is the most important challenge in modern nanoelectronics. To understand the operating modes of such calculators in detail, both the optimal arrangement of the qubit system within the structure and changes in its magnetic properties must be comprehensively ...

Visualization of Atomic Structures on Faceted and Nonflat Surfaces by the Difference-of-Gaussians Approach
A. Yu. Aladyshkin, Chaika A. N., Semenov V. N. et al., Journal of Physical Chemistry C 2024 Vol. 128 No. 38 P. 16143–16153
Detailed analysis of scanning probe microscopy (SPM) data acquired for faceted and non-flat surfaces is usually complicated due to the presence of a large number of surface areas tilted by large/variable angles relative to the scanning plane. As a consequence, standard methods of elimination of global or local slopes by either a plane subtraction or ...

N.I. Fedotov, Maizlakh A. A., V.V. Pavlovskiy et al., Surfaces and Interfaces 2022 Vol. 31 Article 102015
Bi2Te3 is a material with high efficiency of thermoelectric energy conversion. Recently, it was also recognized as a topological insulator, and is often used as the basis for creation of other types of topological matter. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is widely considered as a simple method for growing of multicomponent films, but not as a ...

Unraveling the atomic and electronic structure of nanocrystals on superconducting Nb(110): Impact of the oxygen monolayer
Berman S., Zhussupbekova A., Walls B. et al., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2023 Vol. 107 No. 16 Article 165425
The niobium surface is almost always covered by a native oxide layer which greatly influences the performance of superconducting devices. Here we investigate the highly stable niobium oxide overlayer of Nb(110), which is characterized by its distinctive nanocrystal structure as observed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Our ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that a subtle ...

T. V. Pavlova, V.M. Shevlyuga, Journal of Chemical Physics 2022 Vol. 157 Article 124705
Silicon dangling bonds (DBs) on an adsorbate-covered Si(100) surface can be created in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) with high precision required for a number of applications. However, vacancies containing DBs can diffuse, disrupting precisely created structures. In this work, we study the diffusion of Br vacancies on a Si(100)-2 × 1-Br surface in an ...
