There was not a single Orthodox saint among the victims in the reign of Peter I, which distinguishes Peter from both Ivan the Terrible and Catherine II. St. Mitrofan of Voronezh and St. Dimitri of Rostov, who lived in Peter’s time, had contradictory opinions about his various actions, but were not in opposition to the tsar (and St. Mitrofan actively supported some of his initiatives). The fi gures of the Russian Orthodox emigration, who expressed their opinions freely without the pressure of censorship, mainly distinguished both positive and negative sides in Peter’s activities, which was connected with the search for the balance between state interests and religious identity.
