HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

Drastic demographic events triggered the Uralic spread

Diachronica. 2022. P. 1–35.
Grünthal R., Heyd V., Holopainen S., Janhunen J., Khanina O., Miestamo M., Nichols J., Saarikivi J., Sinnemäki K.

The widespread Uralic family offers several advantages for tracing prehistory: a firm absolute chronological anchor point in an ancient contact episode with well-dated Indo-Iranian; other points of intersection or diagnostic non-intersection with early Indo-European (the Late Proto-Indo-European-speaking Yamnaya culture of the western steppe, the Afanasievo culture of the upper Yenisei, and the Fatyanovo culture of the middle Volga); lexical and morphological reconstruction sufficient to establish critical absences of sharings and contacts. We add information on climate, linguistic geography, typology, and cognate frequency distributions to reconstruct the Uralic origin and spread. We argue that the Uralic homeland was east of the Urals and initially out of contact with Indo-European. The spread was rapid and without widespread shared substratal effects. We reconstruct its cause as the interconnected reactions of early Uralic and Indo-European populations to a catastrophic climate change episode and interregionalization opportunities which advantaged riverine hunter-fishers over herders.

Kildin Saami negation is not where you would expect it
Поцелуев В. А., Ural-Altaic Studies 2026 Vol. 62 No. 3 P. 62–81
In recent years, the researchers working on Uralic languages within Minimalism seem to have built a consensus on how to define the position of negation in any language with a negative verb. The main and usually the only argument is based on the work [Mitchell 2006]. The argument is as follows: if the negative verb expresses tense, ...

Postnominal numerals are over-specified in referential communication: Evidence from Thai in comparison to Russian
Zevakhina N., Щипкова А. А., Chinkova A., Voprosy Jazykoznanija 2025 No. 2 P. 105–122
This paper presents experimental evidence for the over-specification (redundant use) of Thai postnominal numerals in referential communication. The first experiment reveals high rates of over-specification in oral responses that include Thai postnominal and Russian prenominal numerals tested in a contrastive multi-number visual context. The second experiment demonstrates lower but still relatively high rates of over-specification in written responses that ...

Прагматика употреблений глагола resultar ‘оказываться’ для выражения эвиденциальных значений и нового знания в испанских академических текстах
Вилинбахова Е. Л., Zevakhina N., Terra Linguistica 2025 Т. 16 № 3 С. 13–30

Acta linguistica Petropolitana 2025 Vol. 21 No. 2 P. 270–286
The paper reports on an experimental study that reveals a difference between two types of under-informative utterances with the quantifier “nekotoryj” (‘some’) in Russian. The experiment was conducted as an inference task based on [Geurts, Pouscoulous 2009; Val Tiel et al. 2016] with some modifications. The experiment showed that both types of utterances more often have inference-based interpretations rather than ...

A combination of properties of direct, indirect, and free indirect discourse: A case study of the Russian particle “mol”
Zevakhina N., Voprosy Jazykoznanija 2026 No. 3 P. 54–70
The paper demonstrates that the Russian particle mol exhibits a combination of properties associated with direct, indirect, and free indirect discourse (FID). First, mol-clauses license shiftable linguistic items (adverbial indexicals, expressive speech acts, imperatives, evaluative lexical items) not only in FID, as typically assumed for such linguistic items, but also in indirect discourse. Second, first- and second-person pronouns in ...

Interrogatives and exclamatives with multiple wh-phrases in Russian: An experimental study of grammatical acceptability and felicitousness of interpretations
Sigdel E., Zevakhina N., Krasnoschekova S., Vestnik of Saint Petersburg University. Language and Literature 2026 Vol. 23 No. 1 P. 217–234
The paper investigates Russian interrogatives and exclamatives with multiple wh-phrases based on two experiments, with additional support of the data from the Russian National Corpus. Since exclamatives are often viewed parallel to interrogatives, it is important to study both types of clauses with multiple wh-phrases alongside and to look for similarities and/or differences in their ...

Embedded wh-exclamatives? Evidence from Russian quotation particle “mol” and complementizer “ˇcto”
Zevakhina N., Studi slavistici 2026 Vol. 23 No. 1 P. 111–126
Using syntactic embeddability diagnostics, the paper demonstrates that Russian wh-exclamatives with the quotation particle mol and/or with the complementizer čto are embeddable and thus contributes to the ongoing theoretical and cross-linguistic discussion of embedded wh-exclamatives and their (in)subordination status. This analysis is applicable to rhetorical questions (with the quotation particle mol and/or with the complementizer čto), which are traditionally ...

Stronger right-hemispheric involvement in language processing is associated with greater functional connectivity between the left-lateralized language-related network and the cingulo-opercular network
Karpychev V., Malyutina S., Dragoy O., Brain Structure and Function 2026 Vol. 231 Article 69
Language comprehension and production are predominantly supported by the left-lateralized language-related network (LRN). However, right-hemispheric homologs of the language regions can also contribute to language processing, resulting in reduced left-hemispheric language lateralization. To date, it remains unclear whether less left-hemispheric language lateralization is associated with the recruitment of other non-language networks and their interaction with ...

The rock art of the Minusinsk Basin has a long academic history; however, it still brings about new fascinating discoveries. Some petroglyphs of the Tesin period show people sitting cross-legged on the floor in the so-called Oriental fashion. These images have not yet received special scientific attention. Such images are most often single; they are to be found ...

Varshaver E., Rocheva A., Ivanova N. et al., Nationalities Papers: The Journal of Nationalism and Ethnicity 2025 Vol. 53 No. 2 P. 426–448
Migrant residential concentration areas have been a significant focus for research, but academic attention has primarily centered on their effects rather than how they form. There is some research considering the discrete factors of such areas’ emergence, but these factors are rarely fused into a comprehensive explanation with a description of specific mechanisms in operation. ...

Landscape patterns of shrubification in the Siberian Low Arctic: A machine learning perspective
Derkacheva A., Frost G., Epstein H. et al., Journal of Ecology 2025 Vol. 113 No. 10 P. 2813–2831
Tundra shrub expansion is a central form of change in warming Arctic ecosystems, but the pace of shrubification varies across spatial scales, complicating efforts to understand its drivers and consequences. Here, we apply convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to very-high resolution satellite image pairs acquired 10–15 years apart (circa 2005–2019) to identify spatio-temporal patterns of tall shrub ...
