HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Country-level efficiency and the index of dynamic entrepreneurship: Contributions from an efficiency approach

Technological Forecasting and Social Change. 2021. Vol. 162. No. January 2021. P. 1–13.
Dionisio E. A., Inácio Júnior E., Brandao Fischer B.

The objective of this article is to address aggregate performance indicators in National Systems of Entrepreneurship from an efficiency perspective. Our assessment is based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) applied to data from the Index of Dynamic Entrepreneurship (IDE) for a sample of 60 countries. Besides providing information on the efficiency score of each country, this approach allowed the identification of benchmarks for best practices and the construction of an efficiency ranking. Findings offer guidance for refined entrepreneurship-oriented policies that take into account characteristics of heterogeneous socioeconomic contexts. Surprisingly, top-performing countries in the IDE ranking have relatively inefficient ecosystems while countries in the lowest positions generally demonstrate higher efficiency scores. Implications of our research encompass the need for policymakers to develop more in-depth knowledge concerning their own entrepreneurial ecosystems’ attributes and productivity. Efficient systemic outcomes can be obtained through different configurations, so a hierarchical view of attributes limits the adequacy of policies for different contexts.

Entrepreneurial ecosystems as spatial mosaics: drivers of value creation across geographical spaces
Pigola A., Fischer B., Salati Marcondes de Moraes G. H. et al., Small Business Economics 2025 Vol. 65 P. 2277–2300
Recent literature highlights heterogeneous spatial patterns in entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs), traditionally viewed as territorially bounded phenomena. However, growing evidence suggests that EEs possess complex spatial topologies. Existing research, primarily at the EE level, lacks insights into how individual entrepreneurs navigate these spatial structures. This study takes a microfoundational approach to examine why and to what ...

Heterogeneous profiles and trajectories of science and technology parks: evidence from Brazil
Dávila Bolliger R., Brandão Fischer B., Ferreira de Faria A. et al., The Journal of Technology Transfer 2025 Vol. 50 P. 1461–1490
Science and Technology Parks (STPs) have become popular instruments among policymakers worldwide. Yet, empirical studies have questioned the effectiveness of STPs in generating the desired impacts on tenant companies and in regional development. Recent literature attributes these conditions to a lack of focus on the inherent heterogeneity of STPs and their respective tenants. This research ...

Connectedness of entrepreneurial ecosystems: evidence from the mobility of knowledge-intensive entrepreneurs
Spinazzola M., Scuotto V., Pironti M. et al., Small Business Economics 2025 Vol. 65 P. 1517–1534
Entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs) are regarded as ideal breeding ground for knowledge-intensive entrepreneurs (KIEs). Yet, as EEs are mostly considered isolated from each other and their connectedness is neglected, there is a lack of research on their capacity to attract KIEs rather than to locally nurturing them. Inadequate data has been a major obstacle to this ...

However, there is significant heterogeneity in resource endowments of high-impact ecosystems, challenging the prevailing thesis in entrepreneurial ecosystem ...

Entrepreneurial ecosystem as a spatially fluid concept: new territorial perspectives on entrepreneurship
Fischer B., Guerrero M., Mayer H. et al., Small Business Economics 2025 Vol. 65 P. 1283–1300
Although the concept of entrepreneurial ecosystems (EE) is inherently spatial, the actual spatiality of these productive structures has been largely assumed rather than defined based on its formative processes. The oversimplification of the spatiality of EE seems to be a function of empirical reliance on available data, a situation that has generated broadly accepted definitions ...
