The article provides an analysis of Islamism as a socio-political movement, the author considers its numerous social functions, broad public support, deep national roots, the reasons for its many facets. It is shown that moderate Islamism, in contrast to the radical approaches to integrate into the legal political space, therefore it can be an ally in the fight against radical Islamism, as well as strong secular political regimes. The author analyses the history of emergence of Islamism from the end of the 19th century: it emerged as a response to Western imperialist expansion, the defeat of the Ottoman Empire and the abolition of the Ottoman caliphate. The beginning of the organized Islamist movement was the emergence of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt in the late 1920s. The major milestones in the development of Islamism, the reasons for the so-called Islamic revival since the late 1970s and the rise of Islamic terrorism, as well as the current state of Islamism are mentioned in the article
