Стороны света в древнегреческом языке и системы пространственной ориентации

The paper deals with cardinal direction terms in Ancient Greek. I propose a hypothesis, explaining the strong preference for expression static spatial relations by dynamic markers as a case of hodological spatial narrative (representation of spatial relations as routes to a destination). I argue that absolute cardinal terms become cognitively salient as directions with the development of geography, when the two-dimensional, cartographic way of describing large-scale spatial relations gradually replaces hodological descriptions and thus influence conventional spatial constructions.
