The present article deals with the work The History of the Temporal World of an East-Syriac monk John (Yoḥannān) bar Penkāyē (end of 7th century). The first chapter of the History narrates the beginning of the world and human history, generally following the book of Genesis, and describes events of Gen 1–5:24. This chapter of Bar Penkāyē’s work is discussed in connection with other East-Syriac works concerning the exegesis of the book of Genesis as well as the works that influenced East-Syriac authors. The edition of the hitherto unedited chapter is based on six manuscripts and includes its English translation.
