According to ancient Buddhist hagiographic texts, Buddha's mother Maya died on the seventh day after his birth. This paper tells about how did ancient Buddhist authors attempt to justify this sorrowful event. Besides an attempt is made to find out if there is any connection between this episode of the Buddhist legend and some typical stories and characters from ancient Indian epic and brahmanic literature.
