The Emergence and Development of Minting Silver Coins in the Hospitaller Order of the Holding Period the Island of Rhodes
This article deals with the problems of the silver coinage of religious-military Order of Hospitallers. In particular, considered the period from the beginning of the minting of silver coins, which began in 1319 after the capture of the island of Rhodes and to the loss of the island, when the Order was in exile. The basis of this study was the analysis of the images of the Order of the Knights of silver coins, which at first was called the Hospitaller Order, then the Order of St. John, now better known as the Order of Malta. Also, in this study, the study of Russian and foreign authors have been used - experts in the field of numismatics and the history of the Order. As a result of the study it was observed borrowing and imitation in this period coins of other countries. Over time, the image on the coin underwent minimal changes, and most of the changes have been associated with the legend on the coin. It was she who showed the position of the legend of the Grand Master, whether the desire to assert its authority or to protect their possessions from the invaders. In addition, in the context of the issuer's specificity - the Military Order of the spiritual, as well as the dominant ideology in the Middle Ages, strong religious motives when creating images of coins, both in the scenes and individual graphic elements, as well as in the legends on the coin - displaying biblical scenes.
