What is known as prosodic orientation in German studies of language and poetry has noticeably influenced the Russian formalists by providing an impulse to the morphological examination of verse structures. Unfortunately, this tradition was interrupted in Germany in the nineteen-thirties. However, these studies were resumed and further developed, in varying degrees, in Russia, some East-European countries and, later, in United States. Currently this method is used, more and more frequently, in comparative verse studies. The present paper reveals the usefulness of its application in the analysis of origin and early development of German, Dutch and Russian iambic poetry. The method lights up the impact of one poetic tradition upon another.
