Traces of Islamic influence in the Christian written heritage of Ethiopia
St. Petersburg Annual of Asian and African Studies. 2015. No. 3. P. 91-95.
Sergey A. Frantsouzoff
The paper examines the occurrence of some ideas, notions and expressions of Islamic origin in two Christian works composed in the Classical Ethiopic (Gə‘əz) language. One of them is liturgical (a shortened version of ‘The Praise of Mary, the sister of Moses’), the other belongs to the local hagiography (the life of the saint king Yəmrəhanna Krəstos who ruled in the eleventh or twelfth century) and is especially rich with traces of Islamic influence. Such a phenomenon should be explained by the tradition of cultural interchange between the Christians and Muslims during their long coexistence in the Horn of Africa.
