The article “The Masonry Architecture of Kargopol’ in the Middle of the 18th Century” deals with one of many regional architectural traditions of 18th century Russia. Seven churches built in Kargopol’ in this period follow the local architectural tradition, the author argues. Two of them are of special interest. The architecture of the Trinity church in Troitsa (1744) is interpreted as a transformed variant of Solvki monastery church. St. John Baptist Nativity church in Kargopol’ (1751) has a very rare two-pillars construction and unique ‘cask’-vaulted altar. All the churches under consideration have a peculiar style characterized by conservatism and occasional use of features typical to wooden buildings. The author concludes the Kargopol’ architecture remains the most conservative of mid 18th century regional schools in Russia.
