‘Our Team Consists of True Leaders in Their Respective Academic Disciplines
The HSE International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis studies a wide range of methods for analysing decision-making and possible scenarios for the development of natural, socio-economic, and political phenomena using various mathematical models. The application of advanced mathematical methods to forecasting helps to prevent negative outcomes and avoid erroneous decisions. The HSE News Service spoke to the centre’s director, Prof. Fuad Aleskerov, about its work.

Shishkin S., Almazov A., Vlassov V. et al., Электронный научный журнал "Социальные аспекты здоровья населения" 2026 Т. 4 № 72
Abstract Significance. The epidemiological, clinical, and socioeconomic effects of healthcare digitalization are actively discussed in the scientific literature. Less attention has been paid to changes in the organization of healthcare resulting from the introduction of digital technologies. These changes have not been the subject of specific research. However, digital technologies is becoming a driver for the ...

Онтологический разрыв: когда Другой — алгоритм
Ugleva A. V., Социологическое обозрение 2026 Т. 25 № 3 С. 268–293
This article undertakes a socio-philosophical analysis of a situation in which the place of the Other within the structure of subjective experience is occupied by an algorithmic agent – an entity that simulates understanding yet remains devoid of genuine subjectivity. To investigate this configuration, the author turns to psychiatric practice as a representative case study: ...

Large language models (LLMs) in healthcare currently attract significant interest. This study compared GigaChat and YandexGPT by evaluating 1,200 LLM-generated responses to physician queries from outpatient and inpatient settings across 7 topics. Thirteen expert physicians assessed the responses using a 5-point scale across five criteria: relevance, correctness, safety, completeness, and language literacy. We performed paired ...

Preeclampsia (PE) is a severe obstetric complication caused by chronic placental ischaemia. Genome-wide profiling of microRNA isoforms in two trophoblast hypoxia models (CoCl2 and the oxyquinoline derivative neuradapt, BeWo b30 cells) and clinical PE samples (placental tissue, syncytiotrophoblast vesicles) revealed concordant downregulation of hsa-miR-143-3p isoforms. Under a strict fold-change threshold, the canonical isoform (21 nt) ...

Validation of novel naturalistic limb movement stimuli for studying biological motion perception in adults
Koriakina M., Ntoumanis I., Blagoveshchensky E. et al., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2026 Vol. 20 Article 1754368
Introduction:  Understanding how we perceive and interpret the movements of other living beings is fundamental to social interaction, survival, and navigating our dynamic environment. Traditional studies of biological motion perception have predominantly employed simplified stimuli, such as point-light displays, which sacrifice ecological validity for experimental control. Methods:  To overcome this limitation, we created a novel stimulus set featuring ...

Discovering New Orthologous Groups with P-COGs
Bug D. S., Kuzovenkova D. A., Tishkov A. V. et al., Biochemical Genetics 2026
Deciphering the evolutionary history of genes is foundational for biomedical research, enabling the identification of compensatory mutations in disease-associated genes and the selection of evolutionarily relevant model organisms. However, challenges of multi-isoform handling, the presence of incomplete genomes/proteomes initial datasets, and problems of evolutionary history representation are still present. To address these issues, we introduce ...

Benchmarking Synolitic Graphs for Autism Classification from Multisite Resting-State fMRI
Zaikin A., Vlasenko D., Zakharov D. et al., Diagnostics 2026 Vol. 16 No. 17 Article 2746
Background/Objectives: Synolitic graphs (SGs) were developed for task-based fMRI, where edge weights encode the discriminative power of pairwise regional features; whether similar information can be recovered from resting-state data was untested. We benchmarked SGs for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) classification using the multisite ABIDE-I dataset (871 subjects: 403 subjects with ASD, 468 typical controls; 17 sites; CC200 atlas). Methods: Using ...

Knight M., Bienhoff K., A B. et al., The Lancet Public Health 2026 Vol. 11 No. 9 P. e604–e629
Background Understanding the size, gender composition, and cadre mix of the health workforce and how it has evolved across time and locations can inform policies for planning, recruitment, training, and retention of human resources for health (HRH), and improvement of access to the health-care workforce among populations. Using comparable and standardised data sources, we aim to ...

Razo C., DeCleene N., Johnson C. et al., JAMA - Journal of the American Medical Association 2026 Vol. 336 No. 8 P. 673–696
Importance  Elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of premature death worldwide. Assessing the LDL-C–related burden is critical for guiding prevention and treatment strategies. Objectives  To estimate the global, regional, and national burden of ischemic heart disease and ischemic stroke attributable to elevated LDL-C (relative to 35-54 mg/dL) from ...

Late-phase strategies to overcome limitations of PD-1/PD-L1 therapy: a clinical development trajectory through 2030
Elena A. Andresyuk, Natalya O. Porozova, Londaridze G. et al., Frontiers in Oncology 2026 Vol. 16 Article 1875861
Inhibition of the PD-1/PD-L1 axis has become a clinical standard across multiple malignancies, yet durable benefit remains restricted to selected settings, and many biologically rational combinations fail to maintain clinical benefit in late-phase evaluation. This structured, registry-derived narrative review, supported by expert-guided interpretation, was designed to identify the most clinically meaningful development directions among strategies ...

Reach: Recognising episodes of acute complexity in health: a predictive older patient prioritisation machine learning model
Maghsoohi A., Pavlov V., Rouse P. et al., Health Care Management Science 2026 Vol. 29 Article 37
As the numbers of older people (65 +) rise globally, the pressure on acute hospitals to provide efficient and effective care while addressing resource inequities increases. In this study we introduce Recognising Episodes of Acute Complexity in Health (REACH), a novel Automatic Machine Learning (AutoML)-based predictive model that prioritises older patients and assigns them to complex ...

My research fills gaps in medical anthropology and the anthropology of bureaucracy regarding practices of patient agency, medical discretion, and the production and routing of informed consent within the contemporary medical setting. Developing an ethnography of documents from a Latour Hull perspective, I examine informed consent forms as a network of non-human actors. My work ...

Background Road injuries are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Years of international efforts have aimed to strengthen policy engagement, including the 2020 UN General Assembly's proclamation of the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021–30), targeting a 50% reduction in road traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030. The aim of this ...

However, it would be incorrect to rule out any influence of religion onto law only because of these constitutional principles of secularity and separation. Many of our moral concepts and ethical convictions are imbued with religious meanings, many ...
