The paper analyzes the phenomenon of the mythical Hùng Kings and their cult in the perspective of Vietnamese history, viewed in the conceptual terms of 'the invention of Traditions'  of Eric Hobsbawm and 'simulacra and simulation' of Jean Baudrillard. The focus falls on the origin of this tradition, the debates over the king's name and the growth of the cult in colonial and post-colonial Vietnam. Finally, the paper defines the role of the cult in Vietnam today and considers its recognition as intangible cultural heritage.
