Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

‘Our Team Consists of True Leaders in Their Respective Academic Disciplines
The HSE International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis studies a wide range of methods for analysing decision-making and possible scenarios for the development of natural, socio-economic, and political phenomena using various mathematical models. The application of advanced mathematical methods to forecasting helps to prevent negative outcomes and avoid erroneous decisions. The HSE News Service spoke to the centre’s director, Prof. Fuad Aleskerov, about its work.

When universal machine learning models fail in capacitance prediction for carbon-based supercapacitors: Leakage-aware validation and electrolyte screening

Electrochimica Acta. 2026. Vol. 579. Article 150159.
Makarov D. M., Kalikin N., Fashchevsky K. A., Budkov Y.

Machine learning (ML) has become a powerful tool for accelerating the development of carbon-based supercapacitors;
however, most published models assume that a single predictive framework can describe both conventional
porous carbons and hybrid carbon electrodes. Here, we test this assumption using a comprehensive
benchmark dataset and an extended literature-curated dataset enriched with synthesis- and electrolyte-related
descriptors. Three ML algorithms (CatBoost, TabM, and TabPFN) were evaluated using conventional random
splitting and a more rigorous grouped validation based on electrode identity. Under random splitting, the best
model achieved an RMSE of 14 F/g, whereas electrode-wise validation increased the RMSE to approximately 54
F/g. Extending the dataset to include hybrid electrodes and literature-curated measurements (8038 measurements
in total) raised the grouped-validation RMSE to approximately 200 F/g, whereas restricting it to conventional
carbons reduced it to approximately 55 F/g. These results show that, within the present descriptor
space, a single universal model does not generalize reliably across conventional and hybrid electrodes because
the latter introduce additional charge-storage mechanisms that are not encoded by descriptors developed for
conventional carbons. This indicates that conventional and hybrid carbon electrodes should be treated as distinct
materials classes unless mechanism-specific descriptors are introduced. Incomplete reporting of experimental
descriptors was identified as an additional source of epistemic uncertainty. The validated conventional-carbon
model was subsequently employed to screen approximately 11000 ionic liquids with ionic conductivities
above 1 mS/cm. Cyano-containing organoborate anions consistently ranked among the best electrolyte components
for all representative pore architectures, while functionalized organic cations, including imidazolium
derivatives, repeatedly appeared among the highest-ranked candidates.

LiteKV: A KV cache compression method for efficient inference on resource-constrained devices
Zhang Z., Ilvovsky D., Information Processing and Management 2026 Vol. 63 No. 7
Transformer-based Large Language Models (LLMs) rely on Key-Value (KV) cache to accelerate autoregressive decoding, but memory and compute requirements still grow with context length, limiting deployment on resource-constrained devices. Existing training-free KV cache compression methods mainly rely on attention-driven retention heuristics, which may under preserve structurally informative tokens under tight cache budgets, especially when such ...

Understanding the electric double layer at electrode–electrolyte interfaces, Part III: crystallographic-face dependence of silver capacitance in aqueous NaF solutions
Mazur D., Petr E. Brandyshev, Doronin S. et al., Electrochimica Acta 2026 Vol. 577 Article 149729
The electric double layer (EDL) at a single-crystal metal surface is controlled not only by the electrolyte composition and the electrode potential, but also by the atomic structure of the surface itself. This makes the Ag(hkl)/NaF interface a stringent test for continuum theories of the EDL. In the third part of our series, we examine ...
