'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Картографирование усыхания хвойных лесов по данным дистанционного зондирования Земли на примере лесов хребта Хамар-Дабан

Современные проблемы дистанционного зондирования Земли из космоса. 2026. Т. 23. № 3. С. 263–275.
Tsydypova M.

The article presents a methodology for mapping coniferous forest decline, based on the integration of automated remote sensing data interpretation techniques, vegetation indices, remote sensing data on above-ground biomass (Biomass CCI (Climate Change Initiative)), and materials from ground-based forest pathology surveys using forests of the Khamar-Daban ridge (Republic of Buryatia) as a case study. The relevance of the research is determined by the spread of dark coniferous forest decline in the study area and the need for effective monitoring of their condition and the dynamics of degradation processes. Multispectral Sentinel-2 satellite imagery was used as source data. A machine learning classification method based on training samples defined from ground data was used for automated
detection of decline areas. An assessment of the areas of coniferous forest decline from 2017 to 2024 was conducted in the study area. On the basis of global Biomass CCI data from 2015–2022, an analysis of spatiotemporal trends was performed, revealing a correspondence between areas of biomass decrease and foci of forest decline in the test area. The presented integrated approach enhances the accuracy and informativeness of monitoring coniferous forest decline and can be integrated into forest pathology control systems.

Батова О. Н., Савинецкая Л. Е., Проявка С. В. et al., Nature Conservation Research. Заповедная наука 2026 Т. 11 № 4 С. 25–39
Spermophilus suslicus is a threatened species listed in Red Data Books at all levels (from regional Red Data Books to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species), and it currently requires special conservation activity. Over the past 30–50 years, its range has changed from continuous to mosaic, and its population has declined everywhere. In 2015, in Russia experimental ...

Effects of snow drought on spring green-up on the Mongolian Plateau
Ari G., Liu X., Jiang L. et al., Ecological Indicators 2026 Vol. 191 Article 115592
Snow drought has become a research hotspot due to its widespread impacts on ecosystems and water resources, yet its effects on vegetation phenology remain relatively understudied. Focusing on the Mongolian Plateau, this study used the Snow Water Equivalent Index and the start of growing season (SOS) to assess the associations between snow drought and vegetation ...

Analytical solution for cylindrical propagation of tsunami in the ocean of variable depth
Didenkulova E., Chugunov V., Didenkulova I., Wave Motion 2026 Vol. 147 Article 103787
This work presents a new analytical solution of the shallow water theory for cylindrical propagation of long tsunami-like waves in the basin of variable depth. Considered model cases are related to tsunami wave propagation from an asteroid fallen into the sea, or from underwater volcanic eruptions. The corresponding bottom geometries represent radially symmetric obstacles such ...

Champion soliton emergence from bipolar solitary wave interactions in the Schamel equation
Flamarion M., Didenkulova E., Pelinovsky E., Physics Letters A 2026 Vol. 598 Article 132218
In this letter, bipolar solitary wave interactions in the Schamel equation are revisited numerically. Two simulation settings are considered: repeated collisions in a periodic domain, and the interaction of a positive solitary wave with a train of negative polarity solitary waves of equal amplitude. In the first case, when the amplitudes are comparable, the larger ...

HLA class I escape drives the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in human populations
Ekaterina D. Riumina, Klink G. V., Alekseeva E. et al., PNAS, США 2026 Vol. 123 No. 35 P. 1–20
The role of escape from the cytotoxic T cell (CTL) response in SARS-CoV-2 evolution remains controversial. Here, we study the origin and spread of SARS-CoV-2 variants whose mutations reduce presentation by the HLA class I alleles common in human populations. We find that 35% of mutations that are characteristic of the variants of concern, and ...

Subsidy Effects on Productivity and Technical Efficiency of Corporate Dairy Farms in the Russian Federation
Nikulina Y., Jamali Jaghdani T., Götz L. et al., / Series "Working Papers". 2026.
The impact of state subsidies on Russia's post-Soviet dairy output remains controversial; this study provides an empirical analysis of that relationship. Using an unbalanced panel dataset of 123 dairy enterprises in the Leningrad Region spanning the period from 2010 to 2023, we employ stochastic frontier analysis to assess these relationships. The results indicate that subsidies ...

Integrating grazing intensity regulation and livestock mobility restoration: A practical test for China’s next-generation rangeland policies
Xue J., Luo Z., Chen Z. et al., Agriculture, Ecosystems and Environment 2026 Vol. 412 Article 110676
Rangeland degradation is a global environmental challenge; however, intense debate persists between equilibrium (focused on the negative effects of grazing intensity) and non-equilibrium (emphasizing livestock mobility for adapting to climate variability) theories in rangeland ecology. In recent years, an integrative theory advocating the “coexistence of equilibrium and non-equilibrium” has emerged to reconcile this debate. However, ...
