Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Functional Brain Connectivity and Musical Training: Insights from EEG Phase Synchronization during Music Perception

Herald of the Russian Academy of Sciences. 2025. Vol. 95. No. 6. P. 963–970.
A. Radygina, S. Kulikova

Musical training has a significant impact on brain organization, leading to functional and structural
adaptations that enhance auditory, visual, motor, and cognitive processes. This study investigates how
extensive musical training shapes functional brain connectivity by comparing professional musicians and
non-musicians. Using EEG phase-locking value (PLV) analysis, we examined neural synchronization across
alpha, beta, and gamma frequency ranges during music perception in tasks with different forms of musical
graphic notation. Our results have shown that musicians demonstrated significantly enhanced functional
connectivity, reflecting a superior ability to integrate auditory, visual, and cognitive information. Specifically,
in the alpha band, musicians showed strong occipital-temporal connectivity across all tasks, with additional
parietal-temporal synchronization during tasks lacking pitch information. Analysis of the beta band activity
revealed significant frontal-temporal connectivity, indicative of enhanced cognitive processing, and task-specific
temporal-occipital synchronization. In the gamma band, musicians exhibited robust frontal-temporal
and frontal-frontal synchronization, associated with advanced emotional and structural music processing. In
contrast, non-musicians displayed reduced, less specialized connectivity patterns, relying on more generalized
cognitive strategies. These findings provide clear evidence that musical training induces profound functional
adaptations in the brain. The enhanced and more efficient cross-regional synchronization in musicians
underscores the role of long-term training in fostering advanced multimodal integration and cognitive flexibility,
which facilitates sophisticated music perception and analysis.

Brachiopoda is a group of animals, that is still insufficiently studied at the ultrastructural level, despite the significance of ultrastructure of tissues and organs for analysing the functional morphology, reconstructing the organisation and biology of numerous extinct brachiopods, and establishing relationships among major taxa. In the present study, we provide a revised reconstruction of the ...

Monahhova E., Gorodnicheva Y., Morozova A. et al., Psychology. Journal of the Higher School of Economics 2026 Vol. 23 No. 3 P. 512–527
The rapid proliferation of misinformation in digital environments poses a serious threat to public health, political institutions, and public discourse. Behavioral research has accumulated substantial evidence on why people believe and share false information, yet individual studies address cognitive biases, social factors, or emotional processes largely in isolation. Additionally, the influential integrative frameworks that do ...

Polarization of opinions in the group: a modeling algorithm considering the dynamics of social bonds
Chebotarev V., Andreyuk D., Elizarova Anastasiya et al., Procedia Computer Science 2022 Vol. 213 No. C P. 596–601
The dynamics of opinion in a group are of interest for a number of practical purposes. In particular, consensus helps and polarization of opinions hinders cohesive teamwork. Existing approaches for modeling opinion dynamics mostly do not take into account the dynamism of social relations in a group. This paper proposes an algorithm and a program ...

Prediction error coding as the computational basis for nocifensive and nocifensive-like behaviors
Batsunov A., Tugin S., Kirasirova L. et al., Frontiers in Neuroscience 2026
Nocifensive behavior (NB) is a protective response to noxious stimuli that threaten tissue damage. However, similar motor responses, termed nocifensive-like behavior (NLB), can be evoked by unexpected innocuous stimuli. This observation challenges strict “labeled-line” models of pain, raising a fundamental question: how does the nervous system discriminate true threats from false alarms? We review evidence ...

Ulyanina O. A., Vikhrova E. N., RUDN Journal of Psychology and Pedagogics 2025 Vol. 22 No. 2 P. 337–360
Rapid digitalization of higher education and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in instruction call for careful evaluation of their impact on students. Traditional face-to-face lectures and those given by an AI-avatar, remote online courses, each create distinct conditions that shape the classroom psychological climate and comfort. Prior research shows AI integration increases engagement, but ...
