‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Зачем (и как) измерять экономическое поведение домашних хозяйств: о проекте НИУ ВШЭ «Экономическое поведение домашних хозяйств»

Вопросы экономики. 2026. № 5. С. 5–16.
Kuzminov Y., Ovcharova L., Radaev V.

This article introduces the special issue of the journal “Voprosy Ekonomiki”, which focuses on household economic behavior. The issue is based on the “Economic Behavior of Households” project, which has been implemented at the Higher School of Economics since 2023. The project consists of two components: a field component, which involves collecting sociological data, and an analytical component, which analyzes the collected data, systematizes it, generalizes it, and compares it with other data sources. The authors of the article, who are the scientific supervisors of the project, emphasize the relevance and significance of this project in terms of combining economic and sociological aspects. They highlight the state of development of economic and sociological thought, which often remains disconnected from each other. This makes it difficult to view macroeconomic processes from the perspective of consumption. However, in a situation where households demand for goods is not clearly defined or predictable, macroeconomists need to have a better understanding of this demand to formulate appropriate programs and policies. The article also emphasizes the importance of collecting microdata on the economic behavior of households, including those with high incomes, to address questions about the future behavior of households if the situation were to change. To make it easier for readers to understand the articles in this special issue, the authors have provided detailed explanations of the data collection methodology, fieldwork specifics, and data composition. Additionally, the project’s microdata are available to researchers, experts, and business associations starting from March 2026.
