От пограничья к центру: интеграция Смоленской губернии в состав Российской империи (XVIII – первая треть XIX вв.)
The article examines the process of integrating Smolensk province into the Russian state and compares it with how Smolensk province was positioned within the administrative-territorial structure of the empire. The author shows that despite the completion of the region's integration by the end of the 18th century, its status within the framework of administrative logic remained ambiguous, and assessments could vary depending on the situation. Throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries, in various administrative-territorial projects (both implemented and unimplemented), Smolensk region gravitated either towards the northwestern (Riga, Pskov) or southern (Oryol, Belgorod, Kursk) regions of Russia. Following the Napoleonic Wars, Smolensk Province began to be oriented towards the center (Moscow) and the west (the Belarusian provinces) of the empire.
