HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Experimental studies of emotional word processing in L1 and L2 in bilinguals: a review

Herald of the Russian Academy of Sciences. 2026.
Kulikova E.
In press

This article is a review of contemporary experimental research on the processing of emotional verbal stimuli in bilinguals. The aim of the work is to describe the key factors that determine differences in the processing speed of emotional words depending on their valence and the language of presentation (the bilingual's L1 or L2). The relevance of the study is driven by the growing interest in the role of emotions in language processing and the lack of a unified theoretical framework, which is linked to the significant diversity of experimental paradigms and stimulus materials used in the research of emotional processing. The article examines key aspects of the problem. The first part is devoted to describing the experimental methodologies used in this field, such as the lexical decision task, affective categorization task, emotional Stroop test, as well as eye-tracking and electroencephalography (EEG) methods, which allow for the recording of physiological correlates of stimulus processing. The second part summarizes results of the research focused on emotional processing in monolinguals: it discusses the influence of valence (positive/negative) and word type (emotion-label or emotion-laden) on processing speed, as well as the interaction of these factors with other psycholinguistic variables, such as frequency and concreteness of the word. Finally, the third part examines the factors influencing the processing of emotional vocabulary in bilinguals.

Kildin Saami negation is not where you would expect it
Поцелуев В. А., Ural-Altaic Studies 2026 Vol. 62 No. 3 P. 62–81
In recent years, the researchers working on Uralic languages within Minimalism seem to have built a consensus on how to define the position of negation in any language with a negative verb. The main and usually the only argument is based on the work [Mitchell 2006]. The argument is as follows: if the negative verb expresses tense, ...

Postnominal numerals are over-specified in referential communication: Evidence from Thai in comparison to Russian
Zevakhina N., Щипкова А. А., Chinkova A., Voprosy Jazykoznanija 2025 No. 2 P. 105–122
This paper presents experimental evidence for the over-specification (redundant use) of Thai postnominal numerals in referential communication. The first experiment reveals high rates of over-specification in oral responses that include Thai postnominal and Russian prenominal numerals tested in a contrastive multi-number visual context. The second experiment demonstrates lower but still relatively high rates of over-specification in written responses that ...

Прагматика употреблений глагола resultar ‘оказываться’ для выражения эвиденциальных значений и нового знания в испанских академических текстах
Вилинбахова Е. Л., Zevakhina N., Terra Linguistica 2025 Т. 16 № 3 С. 13–30
Настоящая работа посвящена исследованию употреблений испанского глагола resultar ‘оказываться’ в рамках эвиденциального подхода и подхода возникновения нового знания, представленных в литературе. Согласно первому подходу, глагол resultar передает инферентивное значение: субъект оценки делает умозаключение на основании наблюдаемых результатов. Сторонники второго подхода считают основным компонентом семантики глагола возникновение нового знания, а инферентивное значение объясняется воздействием других элементов контекста. В работе каждый ...

A combination of properties of direct, indirect, and free indirect discourse: A case study of the Russian particle “mol”
Zevakhina N., Voprosy Jazykoznanija 2026 No. 3 P. 54–70
The paper demonstrates that the Russian particle mol exhibits a combination of properties associated with direct, indirect, and free indirect discourse (FID). First, mol-clauses license shiftable linguistic items (adverbial indexicals, expressive speech acts, imperatives, evaluative lexical items) not only in FID, as typically assumed for such linguistic items, but also in indirect discourse. Second, first- and second-person pronouns in ...

Embedded wh-exclamatives? Evidence from Russian quotation particle “mol” and complementizer “ˇcto”
Zevakhina N., Studi slavistici 2026 Vol. 23 No. 1 P. 111–126
Using syntactic embeddability diagnostics, the paper demonstrates that Russian wh-exclamatives with the quotation particle mol and/or with the complementizer čto are embeddable and thus contributes to the ongoing theoretical and cross-linguistic discussion of embedded wh-exclamatives and their (in)subordination status. This analysis is applicable to rhetorical questions (with the quotation particle mol and/or with the complementizer čto), which are traditionally ...

Stronger right-hemispheric involvement in language processing is associated with greater functional connectivity between the left-lateralized language-related network and the cingulo-opercular network
Karpychev V., Malyutina S., Dragoy O., Brain Structure and Function 2026 Vol. 231 Article 69
Language comprehension and production are predominantly supported by the left-lateralized language-related network (LRN). However, right-hemispheric homologs of the language regions can also contribute to language processing, resulting in reduced left-hemispheric language lateralization. To date, it remains unclear whether less left-hemispheric language lateralization is associated with the recruitment of other non-language networks and their interaction with ...

Emotions towards algorithmic policy decision-making: direct and compensatory associations with trust in governance
Vigoda-Gadot E., Levitats Z., Styrin E. M., Asia Pacific Journal of Public Administration 2026 P. 1–23
Governance is rapidly digitising, yet how citizens’ emotions towards algorithmic policy decision-making relate to their trust in governance institutions remains understudied. Drawing on the affect-as-information model, we argue that emotions constitute a distinct input into institutional trust judgements, operating both directly and by conditioning the weight of cognitive evaluations. We test this argument with a ...
