How to Assess Students Knowledge in the Age of AI
A researcher at HSE University has proposed a flowchart to help lecturers decide how to assess students who use artificial intelligence. It shows where the use of AI should be restricted and where it can be incorporated into the learning process. The article has been published in IT Professional.

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Non-academic staff and technical efficiency of Russian universities 2012–2021

Applied Economics. 2025.
Agasisti T., Akuneeva T., Egorov A., Platonova D., Serebrennikov P.

This paper investigates the relationship between the proportion of non-academic staff in universities

and their organizational efficiency of Russian universities. Recognizing the differing production

functions of research-intensive and teaching-intensive universities, we implement two distinct

model specifications in efficiency estimation. A novel panel conditional order-m efficiency estimator

is applied, incorporating the share of non-academic staff and the time variable (2012–2021) as

simultaneous exogenous factors. The findings demonstrate that the inclusion of these exogenous

variables affects the variance of efficiency scores differently in teaching-intensive and research-

intensive universities. For research-intensive universities, no robust evidence emerges to suggest

a statistically significant relationship between the share of non-academic staff and institutional

efficiency. In contrast, teaching-intensive universities exhibit a positive relationship between the

proportion of non-academic staff and efficiency, both in the full sample and in analyses of specific

years. An extension of the empirical analysis (possible only for 2019) reveals a positive association

between the proportion of specifically administrative staff and efficiency.

Повестка устойчивого развития после 2030 года: возможные развилки
Makarov I. A., Россия в глобальной политике 2026 Т. 24 № 4 (140) С. 164–182

Self-Monitoring Skills in Online Learning and the Role of Metacognitive Prompts: An Exploratory Study
Koval A., Gorbunova A., Podolsky A. I. et al., Psychology in Russia: State of the Art 2026 Vol. 19 No. 3 P. 89–105
Background. Self-monitoring is critical for online learning, yet many students struggle due to cognitive load. Students with higher self-monitoring skills man- age this demand better, but which load types they handle effectively remains unknown. Metacognitive prompts are a common support tool, but it is unclear whether they amplify or compensate for skill differences. Objective. To examine ...

Карпова Д. А., Sizova I., Gordin V. E., Креативные индустрии 2026 Т. 2 № 2 С. 10–31
This article examines the musealisation of industrial heritage and its role in regional and corporate branding. The relevance of this study stems from deindustrialisation processes, the growth of industrial tourism, and the need to preserve historical memory, which is particularly important in the context of Russian realities—the lack of a legal definition of the concept ...

When green is not attractive: energy transition, capital inflows, and environmental outcomes in BRICS economies
Kilinc-Ata N., Warong M. M., SN Business & Economics 2026 Vol. 6 Article 326(2026)
Green transitions are widely expected to attract cleaner capital and accelerate decarbonization; however, emerging-economy evidence increasingly challenges this assumption. This study examines the dynamic relationship between energy transition indicators and capital inflows in BRICS+ economies over the period 1996–2022, explicitly testing the “Green Haven” hypothesis under conditions of global uncertainty. Unlike much of the existing ...

This paper explores the black box behind efficiency measurements in higher education and define the determinants of university efficiency. Particularly, it investigates how the efficiency of universities is affected by the characteristics of the territory in which they operate. We propose an analysis that combines two perspectives: 1) the resource dependence theory, suggesting that the ...
