The article discusses present-day factors and conditions, which, in the author’s opinion, largely determine the directions of development of the fuel and energy sector of the Russian economy as a whole and its individual components (electric power industry, oil and gas industries, etc.).
The most important factors include the features of previously created energy assets (both in the segment of extraction of fuel and energy resources and their subsequent use in obtaining various types of useful energy) and those new features that are being formed under the influence of current processes. A significant role is played by the spatial factor, i.e. dispersal of the centers of energy resources production from the places of their predominant use. This is reflected in the increasing role of local knowledge and skills in the development of new types of energy resource development facilities. Local content also plays a significant part in the transition to alternative energy sources.
In the current conditions, the role of projects in the fuel and energy complex is significantly expanding: it is not only about obtaining energy resources and energy, but also about providing socio-economic returns (social value). The FEC can and has every chance to become one of the impulses for the development of domestic science, machine building, high-tech jobs, raising the quality and standard of living of a significant part of the country’s population. At the same time, the extremely high growth of electricity consumption in some regions for the purposes of cryptocurrency mining is in clear contradiction with this role of the fuel and energy complex (electric power industry, first of all).
