Diversification of Rural Incomes and Non-Farm Rural Employment: Evidence from Russia

Non-farm rural employment is a major issue for future development of rural Russia, because redundant
agricultural labor is generally regarded as the main obstacle to productivity growth in Russian agriculture. It is argued that excess agricultural labor characterizes employment in farm enterprises as well as informal buffer employment on the individual house plot – the “family farm”.
