Античные учения о возникновения языка
This book, which appeals to those who are interested in the history of ancient philosophy
and in linguistic theories, is devoted to classical doctrines of the origin of language from
their beginning in the 5th century ВС up to the theories of the Hellenistic time. Apart from a
detailed reconstruction of Democritus' and Epicurus' doctrines, which represent the
evolutionist approach, the author explores also the views of Parmenides, Plato, Hecataeus
of Abdera, Posidonius, as well as less important doctrines (Diodorus of Sicily, Vitruvius,
Ptolemy) and their relation to the earlier theories. The discussion is focused on controversial
questions, such as the origin and early development of conventionalism and naturalism,
and of the idea of the wise imposer of names of the evolutionist doctrines of development of
human language. Many passages of classical authors are discussed anew or are introduced
for the first time into scholarly literature in this book
