Scientists Create Open Dataset for Studying Concentration
A team of Russian researchers, including scientists from HSE University–St Petersburg, has developed the first open multimodal dataset containing recordings of brain activity, heart function, and video observations to help researchers understand what happens in the human brain during deep concentration. In the future, the dataset could accelerate the development of neural interfaces, rehabilitation technologies, and AI systems. The article has been published in Scientific Data.

‘Science Is Universal-It Knows No Borders
Fuad Aleskerov, Tenured Professor and Director of the International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis at HSE University, together with his colleagues, has developed methods of network analysis in bibliometrics that have made it possible to identify patterns in the appearance and citation of publications in academic journals, as well as their influence on each other. When one or a number of studies are frequently cited by a wide range of journals, this is an indicator that the research is of high quality. By contrast, extensive cross-citation within a limited group of journals increases the likelihood of identifying a network of predatory publications.

Scientists Propose Method for More Efficient Resource Use in Machine Learning
An international group of researchers, including mathematicians from the AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, has provided a theoretical justification for a simple and computationally efficient method of estimating uncertainty in Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD). The paper has been published on the scientific preprint server arXiv.org and presented at AISTATS 2026.

Intracranial Recordings During Down-Regulation of Positive Emotions

P. 220–223.
Otstavnov N., Fedele T., Utyashev N., Zuev A., Kosonogov V.

Our study aimed to examine the neurophysiological markers of positive emotion downregulation. Participants of the study were epileptic patients who underwent a neurosurgical implantation of intracranial electrodes. We recorded brain activity while participants viewed one-minute positive and neutral videos, applying one of the down-regulation strategies (reappraisal and suppression) or just watching. We analyzed intracranial recording for each downregulation strategy, as well as for the control condition (watching a neutral movie) for hippocampus and amygdala. We found a significant difference in the power of the theta frequency band in the right amygdala between “watch-neutral” and “reappraise-positive” conditions as well as between “watch-positive” and “suppress-positive” conditions with higher theta band power for “watch” conditions. Behavioral assessment revealed significant difference between conditions. However, no broadband spectrum differences were found between other conditions and other brain regions. Surprisingly, the power profile of right hemisphere was not significantly different from the power profile of the left hemisphere. We assume that our analysis revealed potential differences (observed on behavioral level), which are not apparent on the sensor level analysis, requiring to continue the study with connectivity analysis.

The chapter is about staging a collective utopia of romantic love through a marriage ceremony. On the one hand, cultural rituals of love as a marriage ceremony meet national values, on the other hand, they are influenced by a wide range of modernization trends (from social demography to market influence and digitalization). The chapter focuses ...

One-minute silent video clips: a database of valence and arousal
Kosonogov V., Efimov K., Kuskova O. et al., Europe's Journal of Psychology 2025 Vol. 21 No. 3 P. 152–159
The article introduces a dataset consisting of 160 one-minute affective video clips with normative values of valence and arousal. Each video was evaluated by 30 subjects, while each subject evaluated at least 20 videos. Compared to previous attempts to collect affective videos, the dataset has several advantages. Firstly, the high number of videos in different ...

An improved video watermarking algorithm with extraction using a mobile device camera
O.O. Evsutin, A.S. Melman, D.I. Podbolotov et al., Computer Optics 2023 Vol. 47 No. 6 P. 972–979
The use of screen-capture-resistant digital watermarks is a promising way to store information invisibly in a video stream for later retrieval by the user using a smartphone camera. However, the development of algorithms that implement this scenario is associated with the problem of balancing between the imperceptibility of embedding and robustness. A serious problem is ...

Epileptogenic high-frequency oscillations present larger amplitude both in mesial temporal and neocortical regions
Karpychev V., Balatskaya A., Utyashev N. et al., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2022 No. 16 Article 984306
High-frequency oscillations (HFO) are a promising biomarker for the identification of epileptogenic tissue. While HFO rates have been shown to predict seizure outcome, it is not yet clear whether their morphological features might improve this prediction. We validated HFO rates against seizure outcome and delineated the distribution of HFO morphological features. We collected stereo-EEG recordings ...

Extending JPEG-LS for low-complexity scalable video coding
Sergeev A., Ukhanova A., Forchhammer S., , in: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical EngineeringVol. 7870: IS&T/SPIE ELECTRONIC IMAGING.: United States of America: SPIE, 2011.
JPEG-LS, the well-known international standard for lossless and near-lossless image compression, was originally designed for non-scalable applications. In this paper we propose a scalable modification of JPEG-LS and compare it with the leading image and video coding standards JPEG2000 and H.264/SVC intra for low-complexity constraints of some wireless video applications including graphics. ...
