‘I Would Like My Research to Help Make the World a Calmer and Better Place
Whatever task Saraa Ali, Junior Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis (LAMBDA) of the AI and Digital Science Institute (HSE Faculty of Computer Science), is working on, she thinks about how it can benefit people. She told the Young Scientists of HSE University project about her large family, diagnosing three-phase motors, and her dream of building a children’s home in her native country.

‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

CAD Architecture for Expansion of WSL-Based Combinational Circuits Dataset

Ch. 50. P. 294–298.
V.V. Zunin, Stempkovsky A. L., Solovyev R. A.

The paper provides an overview of the current state of research in the field of combinational circuits reliability and parameters. Architecture of OpenLane flow, its components and main stages of work are described. Based on this flow, the main parameters are provided that will be used for augmentation and expansion of combinational circuits dataset and further testing. Previously developed software was elaborated to use OpenLane as its part. That is, now WSL (Ubuntu) can be used to launch OpenLane workflow from a Windows program without copying data from/to Linux system; subsequent parsing of the results to highlight the necessary parameters is implemented; parameters are saved to combinational circuits dataset. The modified software was tested for circuit generation and parameters calculation.

Machine Learning Approach to Anticancer Activity Prediction of Transition-Metal Complexes Based on a Large-Scale Experimental Database
Krasnov L., Malikov D., Kiseleva M. et al., Journal of Medicinal Chemistry 2026 Vol. 69 No. 8 P. 8838–8851
In this work, we developed a straightforward data-driven approach to predict the cytotoxicity of metal complexes based entirely on their (metal + ligands) composition. To this end, we have manually curated MetalCytoToxDB─a comprehensive experimental database comprising 26,500 IC50 values for 7050 metal complexes against 754 cell lines from 1921 articles. Based on these, machine learning ...

Semi-automatic annotation of brain vessels in magnetic resonance angiography images
Bernadotte A, Elfimov N., Menshikov I., Scientific data 2025 Vol. 13 No. 41
Accurate segmentation of brain vessels in magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is essential for surgical procedures. Neural networks are powerful tools for medical image segmentation, but their development requires well-annotated datasets. However, publicly available MRA datasets with detailed vessel annotations are scarce. We present a dataset of 100 manually annotated brain MRA images from the IXI ...

Closing the Domain Gap in Manga Colorization via Aligned Paired Dataset
Golyadkin M., Plevokas I., Makarov I., , in: 2025 IEEE/CVF Winter Conference on Applications of Computer Vision (WACV).: United States of America: IEEE, 2025. P. 5580–5590.
This paper addresses the challenge of artwork colorization by proposing a benchmark for manga colorization using real black-and-white and colorized image pairs. Color images are widely recognized for their ability to capture attention and improve memory retention, yet the manual process of colorization is labor-intensive. Deep learning methods for supervised image-to-image translation offer a promising ...

Svetlana Kovalenko, Mamonov A., Kuznetsov V. et al., Sensors 2023 Vol. 23 No. 13 Article 6197
Abstract Detection of fatigue is extremely important in the development of different kinds of preventive systems (such as driver monitoring or operator monitoring for accident prevention). The presence of fatigue for this task should be determined with physiological and objective behavioral indicators. To develop an effective model of fatigue detection, it is important to record a ...
