On December 8, 1991, the leaders of the three republics, secluded in a remote Belarusian forest a few kilometers from the Soviet-Polish border, came to an agreement as a result of which the Soviet Union ceased to exist. This is an unprecedented case in the history of the world. A few people, without any authority to do so, contrary to the Union Constitution and the constitutions of their own republics, decided the fate of a great power, which had a living and acting president, who was the commander-in-chief of a multi-million army, who had at his disposal the most powerful special services, the prosecutor's office, and the internal troops. How could this happen? Was the collapse of the Soviet Union preordained? What are its causes? Could the course of events have been changed?
