Language practices at the micro-level: The case of a multicultural school in Moscow
Ch. 4. P. 67–86.
Abstract: This study examines micro-level language policy and how it is implemented
in one Moscow state school with a high degree of ethnic diversity. We
analyse the measures that the school administration take as well as teachers’ educational
practices when it comes to immigrant children’s linguistic and cultural
integration into the Russian education system. On the one hand, the school has no
choice about the language of instruction, and on the other hand, it has to linguistically
and culturally socialise and integrate students whose proficiency in Russian
is either low or non-existent. The present research identifies the major
challenges that teachers face working in such conditions.
