Ombre dell’Uno. Metafisica dell’ombra e esperienza dell’Uno nel pensiero di Giordano Bruno
This work aims to reconstruct Giordano Bruno's thought about the One, and to understand what kind of experience of the One is possible for the human being. The metaphysics, epistemology and anthropology of the Nolan are indeed related by a common theme: the shadow. Reality occupies a median dimension between light and darkness, between unity and molteplicity. It is shadow-like (umbratile): whatever lives in this dimension can experience and know only shadows. This condition is common to all beings in all parts of our endless universe. It defines the limits of man's experience, but presents also potentialities: as man is just a shadow who only knows shadows, he partecipates indirectly in the light. The shadow bears traces, vestigia of the light. Brunos metaphysical doctrine is somehow the exposition a posteriori of an ascent from the shadows to metaphysical knowledge. The principal object of this present work is the ascent from the shadows to the shadow-like insight of the Good as described by Bruno in his work, expecially in the Furori. "Shadow- metaphysics" indicates the universality of shadow-like dimension, and the fact that the shadow for Bruno is an ontological determination of reality, a necessary determination, as it is metaphysically established. The present work aims to show the continuity of the different levels on which Bruno's thinking develops, a continuity which connects, in a continuous cicle of ascension and descent, the metaphysical level with the physical one and finally with the mental dimension of the human being. Consideration will be given to the mystical doctrine of the silence before God, which is at the base of the great value given by Bruno to images. Also the reader will discover how Nolan's loving veneration of Nature and of the multiform aspects of Life are a consequence of his conception of God as an inscrutable abyss.
