The preface describes the uniqueness and historical value of the book by the French Slavist Jules Legras (1866-1939). Legras is a trained traveller, he is already well acquainted with European Russia and fluent in Russian. The ways of travelling in Siberia are diverse: on the Trans-Siberian railway, on the Great Siberian tract on a sledge and in a tarantass, on a steamer on the Ob-Yenisei canal, on a raft on the Ingoda, on a steamer on the Shilka and Amur, even on a dresin. The Frenchman was captivated by the power and beauty of Siberian nature: dense taiga, impassable forests, full-flowing rivers. Legras visited all major Siberian cities, from Chelyabinsk to Vladivostok, leaving numerous sketches of their life and living.
The book will be of interest to both specialist historians and a wide range of readers seeking to learn about the past of our region.
