Economists Propose More Effective Approach to Reducing Smoking
Economists at HSE University have examined how smokers respond to changes in cigarette prices. When tobacco prices increase, cigarette consumption does not always decline. In fact, spending on tobacco may even rise: according to the researchers, a 1% decrease in cigarette affordability leads to a 0.28% increase in per capita tobacco expenditure. The findings suggest that to reduce smoking rates, tobacco prices must rise faster than household incomes. The study has been published in Voprosy Statistiki.

Biologists Discover Unique Properties of MiR-93-5p MicroRNA in Prostate Cancer
Researchers at the International Laboratory of Microphysiological Systems of the HSE Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology investigated how different isoforms of the same microRNA influence gene function in prostate adenocarcinoma. The study found that in some cases, microRNAs can reinforce each other’s effects by targeting and suppressing the same genes. This finding offers a fresh perspective on the molecular mechanisms underlying tumour development and on the search for disease biomarkers. The results have been published in PeerJ.

Адаптация русскоязычной версии шкалы генерализованного тревожного расстройства (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7)

Консультативная психология и психотерапия. 2023. Т. 31. № 4. С. 31–46.
Zolotareva A.

Aim. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 is the «gold standard» for assessing anxiety in clinical and population studies. The aim of this study was to adapt the Russian version of the GAD-7. Method. In this cross-sectional study, 1,130 respondents participated. They were recruited through accidental sampling. The participants completed the Russian versions of the GAD-7 and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) measuring the severity of depressive symptomatology. Results. The factor structure of the Russian version of the GAD-7 corresponds to both a unidimensional model that measures the general anxiety score and a two-dimensional model that highlights the cognitive-emotional and somatic components of anxiety. The adapted scale has high internal reliability (α = 0,93) and convergent validity, confirmed through statistically significant positive correlations between the GAD-7 and the PHQ-9 scores. Conclusion. The Russian version of the GAD-7 is valid and reliable and can be recommended for assessing anxiety in the general population. Avenues for further psychometric examining lie in expanding validation procedures and involving clinical samples to prove the specificity and sensitivity of the GAD-7, and to determine its diagnostic capabilities in clinical research and practice.

The Temporal Flow of Interaction: Interpersonal Synchronization and Alliance Perception Across Session Parts
Galina Oreshina, Journal of Nonverbal Behavior 2026 Article 10919
Interpersonal synchrony is increasingly conceptualized not as a static marker of rapport but as a dynamic, context-sensitive process that fluctuates across interactional phases to serve distinct relational functions. This study examined whether movement synchrony—absolute, non-absolute, client-leading, and counsellor-leading—was associated with therapeutic alliance in naturally occurring counselling sessions. Twenty-seven video recordings were analysed using motion energy ...

Rectangularity as a perceptual prior in 3D shape perception
Dvoeglazova M., Visual Cognition 2026 P. 1–16
Rectangularity can be an a priori constraint for the visual system to recover a 3D shape from a 2D image. Two psychophysical experiments (n = 16 each) were conducted to test whether observers are biased to perceive trihedral corners as rectangular and whether this bias is perceptual rather than a response bias. The results of ...

The dual structure of anxiety: reconciling general and specific approaches
Alenina E., Kosonogov V., Frontiers in Psychology 2026 Vol. 17 Article 1774838
Anxiety is conceptualized variously as a stable trait, a clinical disorder, or a domain-specific worry, yet it remains unclear whether these forms represent a unified construct or distinct phenomena. This theoretical article proposes a dual-structure model, positing that anxiety operates through a general vulnerability factor (aligned with trait anxiety/neuroticism) alongside orthogonal, domain-specific components (e.g., math, ...
