This paper seeks to elucidate the social reasons, i.e. the chronotope leading to the rocketing of isekai — literature, manga, and anime stories about a modern person getting to another (usually fantasy) world. To understand what could draw the interest of the modern audience to the fantastic moving, the origin of genre is considered. Then, the common themes in a few described subcategories are analyzed. Finally, the conclusion is made that the popularity of this narrative is driven by the ongoing stagnation in Japan during “Lost Decades” and the changed perspective on the social and working standards among younger generations.
