‘Working with AI Solves a Wide Range of Engineering Problems
Artificial intelligence is a working tool based on a balanced combination of algorithms and engineering. Experts and doctoral students from the HSE Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics explain how AI technologies can improve an application, device, or system, and what engineering tasks are solved in the process.

‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

When teaching Japanese as a foreign language, it is customary to explain grammatical markers that convey the meanings of wish and invitation to joint action separately from each other. Meanwhile, comparing these markers for a more accurate understanding of the speaker's intentions, as well as the variability of the context of their use, can be ...

Letuchiy A., Russian Linguistics 2025 Т. 49 № 2 Статья 2
The article discusses types of interpretation that Russian complex sentences with factive, implicative and interpretation verbs get under negation and modal operators. By default, the external negative and modal context affects only the main situation. However, one findsexceptions of this rule. We call ‘transparent readings’ those readings in which the exter-nal context affects semantically both the matrix ...

The category of modality in Japanese language is still widely discussed. What is the essence of modality for native Japanese speakers? How can it be expressed in a Japanese sentence? These two questions are among current ones till nowadays. Despite the extensive theoretical base and the existing traditional description of modality in Japanese linguistics, significant ...

Let G be a reductive algebraic group and let H be a reductive subgroup of G. The modality of a G-variety X is the largest number of the parameters in a continuous family of G-orbits in X. A precise formula for the maximum value of the modality over all affine embeddings of the homogeneous space ...

Психофизиологические корреляты особенностей рефлексии при разной степени тревожности
Сизикова Т. Э., Леонов С. В., Polikanova I., Сибирский психологический журнал 2025 № 95 С. 78–95
Addressing the psychophysiological correlates of reflection in the context of modern psychology based on the integrity paradigm is an urgent and promising area. We rely on the ideas of L.S. Vygotsky and the critical ontology of N. Hartmann, which allow us to analyze reflection using modal analysis and take into account the relationship between mental ...

The so-called acquisitive modality or actuality, describing a successful realization of an action, is a largely understudied type of modal values. It is of significant interest both from the viewpoint of its grammaticalization paths and of a wide and rich variety of its lexical expression. The article discusses one of the main representatives of this ...

Aspect and subjectivity in the modal readings of tenses in Russian
Trnavac R., Leiden Papers in Linguistics 2006 Vol. 3 No. 1 P. 51–73
In the aspectual linguistic literature, a connection between imperfective aspect and modality/subjectivity is quite often mentioned. This article investigates a possible counterargument to this connection by analyzing modal readings of tenses in Russian. Two types of uses of tenses are described: (1) temporal reading of the tense with a modal inference and (2) strictly modal ...

Trnavac R., Review of Slavic Studies 2019 No. 96 P. 211–242
This paper examines how conditional and concessive nonveridical rhetorical relations influence evaluation in the Serbian and Russian newspaper discourse. It also investigates the role of nonveridical elements (Giannakidou 1998) on evaluation in discourse and relates the notion of nonveridicality to similar notions, such as modality, Appraisal (Martin and White 2005), and subjectivity. We adopted the ...

Ненаблюдаемые объекты – сущности или структуры?
Terekhovich V., В кн.: Восьмой Российский Философский Конгресс - «Философия в полицентричном мире». Секции (I).

Algebraic groups whose orbit closures contain only finitely many orbits
Vladimir L. Popov, Transformation Groups 2021 Vol. 26 No. 2 P. 671–689
We explore connected ane algebraic groups G, which enjoy the following finiteness property (F): for every algebraic action of G, the closure of every G-orbit contains only nitely many G-orbits. We obtain two main results. First, we classify such groups. Namely, we prove that a connected affine algebraic group G enjoys property (F) if and ...

The analogues of tense interpretation in Russian embedded clauses: absolute vs. relative modality, absolute vs. relative aspect
Letuchiy A., Компьютерная лингвистика и интеллектуальные технологии 2020 Vol. дополнительный том No. 19 (26) P. 1065–1077
The paper adresses parallels between tense, aspect and modality marking in Russian embedded clauses. It is widely known that tense forms of embedded verbs can be interpreted relatively or absolutely, and in some cases, the relative and absolute use seem to be in free variation. It turns out that the interpretation of modality and aspect ...

From Knowability to Conjecturability
Pietarinen A., Chiffi D., Contemporary Pragmatism 2020 Vol. 17 No. 2-3 P. 205–227
Arguments from knowability have largely been concerned with cases for and against realism, or truth as an epistemic vs. non-epistemic concept. This article proposes bringing Peirce’s pragmaticism, called here ‘action-first’ epistemology, to bear on the issue. It is shown that a notion weaker than knowability, namely conjecturability, is epistemologically a better-suited notion to describe an essential ...

Metaphysics of the Principle of Least Action
Terekhovich Vladislav, Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part B Studies in History and Philosophy of Modern Physics 2018 Vol. 62 P. 189–201
Despite the importance of the variational principles of physics, there have been relatively few attempts to consider them for a realistic framework. In addition to the old teleological question, this paper continues the recent discussion regarding the modal involvement of the principle of least action and its relations with the Humean view of the laws ...

The disadvantages of the traditional method of calculating spare parts, tools and accessories package (SPTA) are considered. A multi-criteria methodology for calculating SPTA package has been developed for the simultaneous use of several criteria, such as weight, size or cost. Based on the convolution method, which allows to reduce the multicriterial task to a scalar one. To check the effectiveness ...
