‘I Would Like My Research to Help Make the World a Calmer and Better Place
Whatever task Saraa Ali, Junior Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis (LAMBDA) of the AI and Digital Science Institute (HSE Faculty of Computer Science), is working on, she thinks about how it can benefit people. She told the Young Scientists of HSE University project about her large family, diagnosing three-phase motors, and her dream of building a children’s home in her native country.

‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

2023. Т. 68. № 3. С. 443–470.
Abdullaev A., Землянский Д. М.

The article provides a comparative assessment of the key socio-economic features and trends in the development of urban agglomerations of Russia in 2015–2021. A distinguishing characteristic of the study is the approbation of a method for assessing the level of economic development of agglomerations using data from the Federal Tax Service of Russia on the volume of tax revenues. The analysis confirms that agglomerations provide an extremely high contribution to the economic development of the country and continue to form the basis for the growth of the taxable economy. The most part of contribution to country development indicators is still provided by the largest Moscow metropolitan agglomeration, the concentration of resources within its borders has only intensified in recent years. The differentiation of the other agglomerations also stays great, and the cumulative contribution of them (in sum) by a number of indicators is comparable to one of Moscow agglomeration. The best economic results are shown by agglomerations with industrial specialization, but the development of the economic complex in them does not have a significant stimulating effect on the growth of labor market indicators, household incomes and service sectors. The least developed agglomerations are ones with a high role of «shadow» sectors in the economy and «administratively designated» ones (Ulan-Ude, Penza, Ryazan), located in regions of the country with a depressed economic situation. Reduced values of development are also typical for agglomerations of the Volga region. At the spatial level within individual agglomerations, there is a clear manifestation of center-peripheral differences by most indicators, however, the study showed that the level of development of the cores of agglomerations and their suburbs is not always high, and the positive influence of the agglomeration core (with the exception of Moscow) rarely spreads beyond the nearest belt of municipalities. The results of the study suggest a narrowing of the approach to delimiting the boundaries of agglomerations and prove that the current state measures for the development of the agglomerations (except Moscow one) have not yet made a significant impact on accelerating economic growth and expanding the geography of the influence of agglomeration factors.

Vorchik A., / SSRN. Social Science Research Network "Social Science Research Network". 2026.
This work is devoted to a theoretical explanation of the Easterlin paradox, according to which long-term economic growth does not make average level of people's happiness increasing. By happiness, we mean the intensity of emotions people experience while comparing their new income with its expected value, or the target income with its original value. In the first case, ...

Helen Selorm Wohoyie, Anikin V. A., Tomsk State University Journal of Philosophy, Sociology and Political Science 2026 Vol. 90 P. 204–211
Menstrual health serves as a critical litmus test for state intervention in contexts where women’s bodily experiences are historically shaped by stigma, cultural taboos, and structural violence. Drawing on Joseph Gusfield’s theory of social problems, this review traces the moral passage of menstruation in Ghana (1992–2025) from a privately managed, stigmatized phenomenon to a matter ...

M. O. Balaban, Vasilizhenko A. A., L. B. Karachurina et al., Regional Research of Russia 2026 Vol. 16 No. 1 P. 151–169
The population dynamics of settlements are determined by many different factors, including, as research shows, the availability of educational and healthcare facilities (i.e., basic social infrastructure) close to home. One can assume a two-way relationship: a decrease in population entails a reduction in the number of assigned students in schools and healthcare institutions and, as a result, the ...

Zamyatina N., Rusakov D., Evgeny V.,
