The article examines institutionalization of the state oath in Russia in the 17th century. This process manifests itself in the regulation of the rite, obligations, and clerical procedures. The transformation of the oath into a stable political institution that ensures control over the loyalty of subjects and stability of power begins with the establishment of model obligations and a place for the oath by Boris Godunov and ends with the approval of an exclusively secular punishment for oath breaking by the Moscow Council of 1681.
