The article analyzes the causes and consequences of the January 2022 protests in Kazakhstan. The main premise of the riots was social injustice and the continuing great influence of Nazarbayev’s elites against whom the political demands of the protest were directed. Special attention is paid to the groups of unknown actors who appeared at the height of the protests and attacked administrative buildings. Unfortunately, peaceful protests became sporadically violent ones, the organisers, participants and aims of which are not fully known. We can assume that they were members of semi-Islamist, semi-criminal structures controlled by top security forces from among the old elites. As a result of the protests, the old elites close to Nursultan Nazarbayev lost much of their influence in politics and the economy, while Kassym-Jomart Tokayev consolidated his personal power and announced large-scale economic and political reforms, which could be seen as a partial success of the protesters.
