Discovering Science through Russian Language: HSE Prep Year Students Present at International Conference in Kazan
On May 23, 2026, the V International Scientific and Practical Conference ‘Discovering the World of Science’ took place in Kazan at the Preparatory Faculty for International Students of Kazan Federal University. Four students of the HSE International Preparatory Year took part in the event: two delivered their presentations in person, while two participated online. Their work was supervised by Acting Director of the International Prep Year Irina Isaeva and lecturer Ekaterina Kozhemyakova.

HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

With the improvement of human life quality, sewage sludge (SS) production is increasing day by day, and its treatment is inevitable. As one of the by-products of sewage water treatment, SS contains a lot of pollutants. If the continuously produced sludge is not properly disposed and managed, it will cause great harm human existence. However, in many areas, the concept of SS treatment is only in the initial stage, and not recyclable, and may cause a series of environmental problems, thus threatening ecological security and human health. Therefore, in order to the harmonious coexistence of the earth and human beings, it is necessary to conduct reasonable treatment and management of SS. In the past, there have been many reports on the specific treatment methods of SS, but few reports on the comprehensive treatment and introduction of SS. Therefore, from the perspective of sludge recycling, combined with the concepts of SS reclamation, reduction and harmless treatment, this chapter introduces SS disposal and management methods in line with the sustainable development strategy and chemical pollutants and pathogenic bacteria in SS, so as to promote the promotion of new SS disposal and management methods. It also lays a foundation for the optimization of SS disposal and management strategy.
