Physicists Discover What Happens Inside a Stable Vortex
Large vortices with characteristic spiral arms are often observed in the atmosphere and the ocean. Physicists from HSE University have explained how these structures form and why they retain their shape. The researchers found that velocities at points located along the same vortex arc remain correlated even over long distances. At the same time, this correlation weakens rapidly with increasing distance from the vortex centre. These differences help explain the formation of spiral arms and may improve models of atmospheric and oceanic currents. The findings have been published in Physical Review Fluids.

Analysis of Ion Atmosphere Around Nucleosomes Using Supercomputer MD Simulations

Supercomputing Frontiers and Innovations. 2022. Vol. 9. No. 2. P. 56–67.
Nikita A. Kosarim, Armeev G., Alexey K. Shaytan, Kirpichnikov M.

The nucleosome is the basic unit of eukaryotic DNA compaction. It consists of about 147 base pairs wrapped around an octamer of histone proteins. Nucleosomal dynamics provides the availability of packaged DNA for various factors that carry out the vital processes associated with chromatin. It is not completely known how the structure and dynamics of the nucleosome depends on the ionic environment. The current researches do not give an unambiguous answer and often contradict each other. In this paper, we demonstrate supercomputer molecular dynamics simulations of nucleosome models surrounded by monovalent sodium and potassium cations. Analyzing the trajectories, we showed the details of the distribution of sodium and potassium ions around the linker DNA, nucleosomal DNA at the sites of nucleosomal opening, and histone residues involved in the process of nucleosomal breathing. We have demonstrated the mobility of DNA linkers and the process of nucleosomal unwrapping in various ionic environments, and also assessed the probable mechanisms of the dependence of nucleosome unwrapping on the type of ions in the system. Our study is intended to emphasize the importance of understanding the role of the ionic environment in the functioning of chromatin.

Hypergraphs from multivariate connectivity: caCOH-based EEG/MEG representation
Vlasenko D., Saranskaia I., Zakharov D., European Physical Journal: Special Topics 2026 P. 1–16
Hypergraphs provide a natural framework for representing neurophysiological interactions distributed across sets of sensors. A key methodological question is how hyperedges should be defined from frequency-resolved electroencephalography/magnetoencephalography (EEG/MEG) data. We demonstrate a construction strategy in which hyperedges are obtained from canonical coherence (caCOH), an extension of coherence that estimates coupling between multidimensional signal spaces. To ...

Generative geospatial modelling with geometric algebra
Yu Z., Wang J., Wang Z. et al., Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences 2026 Vol. 384 P. 1–16
The integration of data-driven and knowledge-driven approaches in generative geospatial modelling (GGM) is often hindered by their mathematical incompatibilities. Here, we propose a geometric algebra (GA)-based framework that employs a unified multi-vector representation to fuse heterogeneous data and diverse knowledge. The framework facilitates structured reasoning and hypothesis generation through a task-adaptable, five-stage cycle: representation, reasoning, ...

Reconstruction of EEG signals using next-generation reservoir computing
Ratnikov F., European Physical Journal: Special Topics 2026 P. 1–10
EEG recordings are often affected by the loss or corruption of individual channels due to electrode detachment, poor scalp contact, or external interference. Such channels must be accurately reconstructed before further analysis. In this study, we investigate Next-Generation Reservoir Computing (NG-RC) as a data-driven approach for reconstructing corrupted EEG channels and compare its performance with ...

Parametric study of hand dorsal vein biometric recognition vulnerability to spoofing attacks
Мизинов П. В., Journal of Computer Virology and Hacking Techniques 2023 No. 20 P. 383–396
Biometric vein recognition systems are vulnerable to presentation attacks. Traditionally, researchers have used a near-infrared (NIR) drawing of the user’s vascular bed to create a presentation attack instrument (PAI). This paper investigates the feasibility of using free software to capture a venous pattern of the hand without NIR under normal lighting conditions and to create ...

Structure of the Obligate Heterodimer of the IHF Protein in Solution and in the Crystal
Dadinova L., Petoukhov M., Mozhaev A. et al., Crystallography Reports 2026 Vol. 71 P. 52–58
Bacterial chromosomes are tightly packed in the cells due to interactions with specific nucleoid-associated proteins. Among them, the IHF protein draws attention due to its presumed influence on intracellular crystallization processes, leading to bacterial resistance to drugs. The crystal structure of the IHF heterodimer is known only in complex with a short DNA fragment, whereas ...

Functional Brain Connectivity and Musical Training: Insights from EEG Phase Synchronization during Music Perception
Radygina A., Kulikova S., Herald of the Russian Academy of Sciences 2025 Vol. 95 No. 6 P. 963–970
Musical training has a significant impact on brain organization, leading to functional and structural adaptations that enhance auditory, visual, motor, and cognitive processes. This study investigates how extensive musical training shapes functional brain connectivity by comparing professional musicians and non-musicians. Using EEG phase-locking value (PLV) analysis, we examined neural synchronization across alpha, beta, and gamma frequency ranges during music ...

The advent of generative chemistry
Vanhaelen Q., Lin Y., Zhavoronkov A., ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters 2020 Vol. 11 No. 8 P. 1496–1505
Generative adversarial networks (GANs), first published in 2014, are among the most important concepts in modern artificial intelligence (AI). Bridging deep learning and game theory, GANs are used to generate or “imagine” new objects with desired properties. Since 2016, multiple GANs with reinforcement learning (RL) have been successfully applied in pharmacology for de novo molecular design. Those ...

Linking transport, structural and relaxation properties of supercooled 1-methylnaphthalene at high pressures via molecular modeling
Nikitiuk B., Nikolay Kondratyuk, Pisarev V., Journal of Molecular Liquids 2025 Vol. 440 Article 128894
Understanding how liquids transition into glassy states under varying thermodynamic conditions remains a fundamental challenge in condensed matter physics. While temperature-driven vitrification has been extensively studied, the effects of high pressure on glass formation are comparatively underexplored -- particularly in molecular liquids. In this work, we employ molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the behaviour of ...

Konshina A., Bocharov E., Konovalova E. et al., International Journal of Molecular Sciences (Швейцария) 2024 Vol. 25 No. 21 Article 11370
Non-immunoglobulin-based scaffold proteins (SPs) represent one of the key therapeutic target-specific and high-affinity binders in modern medicine. Among their cellular targets are signaling receptors, in particular, receptor tyrosine kinases, whose dysfunction leads to the development of cancer and other serious diseases. Successful applications of SPs have been reported for HER receptor type 2 (HER2), a member of the human ...

The paper overviews the results of computational studies of the molecular mechanisms underlying the adaptation of model cell membranes taking place during their interaction with proteins and peptides. We discuss changes in the structural and dynamic parameters of the water–lipid environment, the hydrophobic/ hydrophilic organization of the lipid bilayer surface (the so-called “mosaicity”), etc. Taken together, these effects are ...
