Researchers Find More Effective Approach to Revealing Majorana Zero Modes in Superconductors
An international team of researchers, including physicists from HSE MIEM, has demonstrated that nonmagnetic impurities can help more accurately reveal Majorana zero modes—quantum states considered promising building blocks for quantum computing. The researchers found that these impurities shift the energy levels that typically obscure the Majorana signal, while leaving the mode itself largely unaffected, thereby making its spectral peak more distinct. The study has been published in Research.

The Future of Cardiogenetics Lies in Artificial Intelligence
Researchers from the AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a program capable of analysing regions of the human genome that were previously inaccessible for accurate interpretation in genetic testing. The program adapts large generative AI (GenAI) models for cardiogenetics to predict how specific mutations affect the function of individual genes.

Climate Policies in the BRICS Countries: The Interrelation between GHG Emissions Reduction and Socio-Economic Development

Ch. 4. P. 49–79.
Stepanov I. A., Makarov I. A., Anna Shuranova, Serova D., Kamila Salakhova, Yana Kubrakova, Burlakov A.

The chapter depicts BRICS countries’ climate policies in three dimensions. Firstly, it summarizes key aims, priorities, and directions of national and foreign GHG emissions reduction policies. Secondly, it features main institutions and instruments underling these policies and presents the mechanisms through which primary interest groups’ preferences are formed, coordinated, and incorporated into decision-making. Thirdly, building on the Climate Action Tracker assessments and on the analysis of emissions-growth decoupling effect, it provides an evaluation of the efficiency of climate policy in each country and the prospects of its development. Such three-dimensional analysis enables us to determine the factors that play a role in forming climate policies and defining their ambitiousness and design in China, Russia, Brazil, South Africa, and India – countries with divergent characteristics of socioeconomic development. We also conclude that the countries’ readiness to embark on low-carbon development and the degree of coordination of influence groups’ interests on emission reduction measures is largely determined by their ability to devise such climate policy-related institutional design that allows not only for achieving climate targets, but also for attaining some of the crucial aims and objectives of socioeconomic development.

Karakaya E., Yılmaz B., Alatas S., Environmental Science and Pollution Research 2019 Vol. 26 No. 16 P. 16682–16694
Much of the existing research analyses on emissions and climate policy are dominantly based on emissions data provided by production-based accounting (PBA) system. However, PBA provides an incomplete picture of driving forces behind these emission changes and impact of global trade on emissions, simply by neglecting the environmental impacts of consumption. To remedy this problem, ...
