Since 30 years of the liberalization process of railway sectors of the European Union countries has been started we are able to investigate whether changes in the structure of the railway sectors affected the railway market functioning. Through the analysis of changes of the key railway indicators in Germany and the United Kingdom the main results of liberalization were found. One of the key findings of the paper is a preservation of government high role in railway sector functioning.
