Structured (min,+)‑convolution and its applications for the shortest/closest vector and nonlinear knapsack problems
Optimization Letters. 2024. Vol. 18. P. 73–103.
In this work we consider the problem of computing the (min,+)-convolution of two sequences a and b of lengths n and m, respectively, where n≥m. We assume that a is arbitrary, but b_i=f(i), where f(x):[0,m)→R is a function with one of the following properties: f is linear, f is monotone, f is convex, f is concave, f is piece-wise linear, f is a polynomial function of a fixed degree. To the best of our knowledge, the concave, piece-wise linear and polynomial cases were not considered in literature before. We develop true sub-quadratic algorithms for them. We apply our results to the knapsack problem with a separable nonlinear objective function, shortest lattice vector, and closest lattice vector problems.

We call a family of $s$ sets $\{F_1, \ldots, F_s\}$ a sunflower with $s$ petals if, for any distinct $i, j \in [s]$, one has $F_i \cap F_j = \cap_{u = 1}^s F_u$. The set $C = \cap_{u = 1}^s F_u$ is called the {\it core} of the sunflower. It is a classical result of ...

Reliable Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) evaluation requires propagation models that represent terrain and multilevel infrastructure. Most integrated vehicular simulators still rely on planar models, but the magnitude of the resulting bias is unclear. This study quantitatively compares flattened two-dimensional (2D) and terrain-aware three-dimensional (3D) variants of three scenarios using identical Sionna RT settings. The pipeline combines OpenStreetMap ...

This article concerns the study of modulational instability in the rotated-modified Gardner–Whitham (rmGW) equation. This model incorporates both quadratic and cubic nonlinearities, similarly to the Gardner equation, while also retaining the fully dispersive character of the Whitham equation together with a large-scale dispersive term analogous to that in the Ostrovsky equation. Using a classical multiple-scale asymptotic expansion, we ...

Manual assessment of soybean yield components, such as pod number, is laborious, time-consuming, and subjective. Existing computer-vision approaches based on object detection or instance segmentation perform poorly on close-range RGB imagery of soybean canopies due to severe occlusions, ambiguous plant boundaries, and the high cost of bounding-box annotation. To address these challenges, we propose a ...

We prove that the distribution of these fluctuations converge to a gaussian space-time field that is delta correlated in time but with long-range correlations in space. ...

We study the celebrated Shiryaev-Wonham filter (Wonham, W.M., in J. Soc. Ind. Appl. Math. 347–369, 1964) in its historical setup, where the hidden Markov jump process has two states. We are interested in the weak noise regime for the observation equation. Interestingly, this becomes a strong noise regime for the filtering equations. Earlier results of ...

In this paper, we present explicit formulas for the inverse and determinant in geometric (Clifford) algebras over vector spaces of dimension n = 7. The derivation of these formulas is made possible by generalizing the concept of conjugation to basis conjugation operations. We further develop a general method for constructing such formulas over odd-dimensional spaces ...

Reinforcement learning (RL) is increasingly grounded in tools from probability, optimization, and operator theory. This survey organizes the mathematical structures that underpin the design and analysis of modern algorithms in RL. We begin from Markov decision processes (MDPs) and the Bellman operators, emphasizing contraction mappings, monotonicity, and fixed-point theory that yield convergence guarantees and rates ...

For each integer nonnegative n, in some Hilbert space, we introduce an integral
transform H_n. It is similar to the well-known Hankel (Fourier–Bessel) transform of nth order due
to the fact that it is related to the Fourier transform and its integral kernel is expressed in terms of
the Bessel function J_n. But, unlike the Hankel transform, intended ...
