The article analyses the activities and resolutions of the Second Vatican Council of the Roman Catholic Church in the historical context of the 1960s and its presentation in studies of the French authors from 1980s till 2010s. The attention is paid to the opinions of representatives of the French intellectual community about the topics of sessions of the council and the relevant documents. Catholicism in France was seeking ways for overcoming the institutional crisis which was due to changes in the role of religion in society. In this regard, a signi cant role was played by the restart of relations between the church and society proclaimed at the Council. Besides, it was the ideas of the school of the “new theology” that had a considerable in uence on conceptions of the 2nd Vatican Council; the core of this school was made up of a group of French theologians. The article demonstrates that the 2nd Vatican Council and its resolutions gained positive evaluation in French essayism. The interest of authors in social, political, cultural, and theological issues raised at the Council allows one to state that they regarded this event as one of the most prominent in contemporary history. They kept revealing the main appeal of the 2nd Vatican Council that the development of the dialogue between the church and international society should take place in modern conditions. French journalists and essayists for many decades had been discussing the new sides of the documents and statutes of the Council, con rming the importance of this event for the Catholic society.
