Enhanced performance in fusion plasmas through turbulence suppression by megaelectronvolt ions

Nature Physics. 2022. Vol. 18. No. 7. P. 776–782.
Mazzi S., Garcia J., Zarzoso D., Kazakov Y. O., Ongena J., Dreval M., Nocente M., E. Suchkov

Alpha particles with energies on the order of megaelectronvolts will be the main source of plasma heating in future magnetic confinement fusion reactors. Instead of heating fuel ions, most of the energy of alpha particles is transferred to electrons in the plasma. Furthermore, alpha particles can also excite Alfvénic instabilities, which were previously considered to be detrimental to the performance of the fusion device. Here we report improved thermal ion confinement in the presence of megaelectronvolts ions and strong fast ion-driven Alfvénic instabilities in recent experiments on the Joint European Torus. Detailed transport analysis of these experiments reveals turbulence suppression through a complex multi-scale mechanism that generates large-scale zonal flows. This holds promise for more economical operation of fusion reactors with dominant alpha particle heating and ultimately cheaper fusion electricity.

Groshev Maksim, Rybakov Petr, Teterin N. et al., Sensors 2026 Article 6171
Manual assessment of soybean yield components, such as pod number, is laborious, time-consuming, and subjective. Existing computer-vision approaches based on object detection or instance segmentation perform poorly on close-range RGB imagery of soybean canopies due to severe occlusions, ambiguous plant boundaries, and the high cost of bounding-box annotation. To address these challenges, we propose a ...

Enhancing Boundary Stability in Decision Trees and Random Forests: A Weighted Sample Duplication Approach
Konstantinov A., Elizarova Anastasiya P., Utkin L., Computing, Telecommunications and Control 2026 Vol. 19 No. 1 P. 16–25
Decision trees and their ensemble extensions, such as random forests, are widely used as classification models due to their simplicity and interpretability. However, in many real-world tasks where class labels overlap in the feature space, standard decision trees rely on hard splits that create fragile decision boundaries. In these regions, small perturbations in the input ...

Enhancement of superconductivity by polarization of magnetic impurities in disordered films
Seleznev G., Fominov Yakov V., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2026 Vol. 114 No. 7 Article 074505
Dirty superconducting films with magnetic impurities can exhibit nontrivial behavior in a magnetic field that polarizes the impurity spins. As predicted by Kharitonov and Feigelman (KF) [JETP Lett. 82, 421 (2005)], this polarization reduces the exchange scattering rate. Consequently, a parallel magnetic field can enhance the critical temperature Tc when magnetic-field pair breaking is weak, as realized for ...

V. A. Frantsuzov, Artemyev A. V., P. I. Shustov et al., Physics of Plasmas 2022 Vol. 29 No. 5 Article 052901
Whistler-mode waves are one of the most intense electromagnetic waves in the planetary magnetospheres. These waves are responsible for energetic electron losses into the atmosphere and for electron acceleration up to relativistic energies. Generation of whistler-mode waves is typically attributed to the thermal electron anisotropy. The anisotropy corresponding to the marginal stability for whistler-mode waves ...

Shustov P., Artemyev A., Volokitin A. et al., Physics of Plasmas 2022 Vol. 29 No. 012902 P. 1–10
Recent observations of hot plasma in Earth's magnetotail and magnetosheath demonstrate nonlinear sub-ion scale magnetic holes, spatially localized dips of magnetic field intensity. These structures resemble magnetosonic solitary waves, but do not include any significant density perturbations. Instead, the magnetic field depression is balanced by hot electron pressure. This study aims to investigate linear modes ...
